Code Red Goes The Way Of Y2K
beanerspace writes: "In spite of Michael Hyatt-like hype, the Washington Post now reports that the 8pm EST deadline for the Code Red worm came and went without grinding the internet to a halt. Darn, I was sorta hoping it would so I could take the day off and go fishing." Why is it that Code Red gets the trumpets and klaxons, while Sircam continues to spread private documents(!) with considerably less attention? Update: 08/01 03:41 PM by T : On the other hand, incidents.org's graph shows a different picture of Code Red's progress, as several readers have pointed out. That's a pretty little curve there, isn't it? -
What's the Government /Really/ Classifying?
Nachtjäger writes "The Federation of American Scientists has an entire section of their site devoted to US Government secrets, including the lately hyped Echelon stuff. " Interesting project - it's an interesting chronicle of the declassification of massive amounts of papers. -

DVD in your Glasses
Nachtjäger writes "They've got a DVD player that will display on lightweight glasses. It's 2 little screens, so 3D would be simple, and the expensive part is the DVD player. Oh, and the battery will go for 3.5 hours." Still a tad on the clunky side, but getting there. -

Subject: Linux-2.2.0 (pre1) Ok, we're in the pre-2.2.0 series now,
I'm all synched up with Alan,
and I don't have anything pending any more.
Over the internet nobody can hear you all
scream in pain over all your favourite
features that didn't make it. Linus "another year older and wise as hell by now" Torvalds -
Ask Slashdot:Changes in Latitude
Topher writes "I've got a Dell Latitude XP 4100C. I got RH5 on there no sweat, but I can't seem to get X running. It wants the horizontal refresh rate in the setup, and says it's VERY important. unfortunately Dell doesn't seem to think it's important enough to tell me. Any ideas on how I'd find out? When I try and run X just guessing the Hrefresh rate, it puts up a zillion tiny horizontal lines on the screen, and I have to telnet in and shutdown. " -
Make an Aquarium out of that old Mac
Topher writes "You may have seen this before, it's certainly not new, but there's a site that tells how to make an aquarium out of an old Mac, including exactly where to drill and bolt and glue, and everything." check it out here. I wish I had an extra 20-30 hours a week so I could try to do this sort of stuff more often.
