Check out gPhoto
But while we're on the subject of digital cameras, does anyone know of one that works under linux?
You'll want to check out gPhoto for a list of cameras.

Re:This is great news
Hopefully Nikon makes a Video for Linux driver for their camera. It's nice to have all the devices under a single device.
Sure, but by the looks of it, there are at least three such interfaces in development: Video for Linux (for video input), SANE (for scanner input), and gPhoto (for input from digital cameras). The three of them have different foci, so a project merge is somewhat inadvisable. But there are also instances where it would be convenient to use the same interface to different devices.
I doubt that there is a simple solution to this, and I don't know if these projects are working together, but I do know that it would save a lot of work if you only had to write one driver to a common interface, instead of three. -
True credits for the photo of MiguelThe photo of Miguel that ABCnews used, was shot by Hans Schou ( chlor@inet.uni2.dk), allthough they have just annotated it "www.gphoto.org" in the article.
They probably found it in this gallery that I posted at www.gphoto.org,
as an example gallery.
Mr. Schou used a Olympus Camedia C-1400L digital camera.

Support for digital cameras..
gPhoto does not yet support video conferencing streams over networks, allthough it has a live
camera plugin. You might want to check out the
project pages at www.gphoto.org
and help write a driver for your 3COM (?) camera. -
gPhoto is free of charge!

GNU Photo - http://www.gphoto.org/
GNU Photo is written by independent developers.
Check out http://www.gphoto.org/ for details.
RedHat make a nice GNU/Linux distribution, and GNU Photo will be distributed as RPMs, but RedHat are not involved with GNU Photo.

Protocol Specs & gPhoto
i'm not sure if there's software out there, but you can try this:
write the manufacturer and ask for protocol details, then contact the gPhoto developers
(here) with the details. we'll build the library for you, and include it in the current CVS.
on the average, manufacturers are not-so-happy to provide protocol details (propriety stuff), so don't get your hopes up there, BUT (big BUT), if that route's a no-go, then contact the gPhoto developers anyways, and they'll help "get" the protocol with you.
of course, if there is software out there, then everything i said is for nothing... :) -
Maybegphoto has drivers for a number of digital cameras, although apparently not yours.
Ask them, and they may help to find out if your camera is compatible with anything else, or they may give you a hand to reverse engineer the protocol used...
