Re:Go for it
I don't think a short-range cell tower needs to cost that much. Hackers had a private one operating during HAR 2009.

Re:I may have read that one wrong
I'm wondering how this is different from the GSM network at Hacking At Random, which is most definitely an Open Source as well as anarchistic art crowd. Quite likely some drugs too (considering it's Dutch). Not a lot of sex, though.
Anyway, HAR had its own GSM network last year. Probably not solar powered, but very likely open source. You'd get a new phone number, however, which wasn't really what I wanted. (Unfortunately my iPhone had absolutely no reception there. Excellent wifi, but no phone calls.)

Re:Horrible Article
...the iPhone is NOT TIED TO AT&T. Believe it or not, countries exist outside of USA. This discussion on
/. about iPhone sucks because all of you don't seem to understand that the iPhone is sold GLOBALLY. STFU ABOUT AT&TYou are right. A lot of people write that the iPhone has bad voice quality, because they only tested it with ATT. Well, I get better voice quality from the iPhone than with all Motorola and Nokia handsets I have tried so far. Because I am using a good network.
I (used to) get excellent sound quality from my iPhone despite being on a horrible network (T-Mobile in Netherland). I often don't have any reception at all when in a supermarket, and I had hardly any reception during HAR, but when I do have reception, the sound is excellent.
Being tied to a network is still a big factor in why I want to switch, though. Or maybe I should order one from Belgium.

Re:"It's the Network"
The G1 and myTouch are nice, unfortunately they're on T-Mobile, which is nice but not nice everywhere. If T-Mobile worked in my area I would certainly try them out, at least.
That's exactly why I want to get rid of my iPhone. It uses T-Mobile here, and the T-Mobile network here sucks. I was without phone connection during HAR. The HTC Hero (with Android) uses KPN which has the best network, so that's what I want.
Also, the iPhone sucks because Apple keeps denying cool apps from the app store. I think Android's openness may end up winning in the long run when more and more people discover this problem.

Re:What are the costs?
Some information is given on the costs during the talk, you can find links to the video archive of the talks at https://wiki.har2009.org/page/Media
some of the pages are currently down I think because the event network is down however servers should be on the move back to the datacenter. Some of the links are currenlty working so you can already have a peak.

Re:There's tickets?
There are other festivals that are similar to Burning Man--out in the middle of nowhere and dedicated to radical free expression--but which are still quite unknown. I'm obviously not going to name any, but if you are the sort who is into that sort of thing, you probably have friends who are also into that sort of thing and who know some cool places to attend.
I'm into that sort of thing, but all my friends have become really boring lately. There's lots of festivals I want to go to but don't have anyone to go with. Well, I'm at Hacking At Random now, and found two friends as well as making a lot of new ones.
