Linux In JavaScript, With Persistent Storage
An anonymous reader writes "Remember Fabrice bellard's [Linux-booting PC emulator in JavaScript] ? This modified version [Note: click on "emulator.html" in that directory to see it in action] allows the same emulator to boot the most recent linux kernel, 3.0.4, as well as providing the user with persistent storage. It is achieved by building a virtual block device, which stores data in HTML5 local storage. The block device can be partitioned and formatted as ext2, so it can be easily used." -
Remote Root Exploit in CVS
RenHoek writes "Security expert Stefan Esser from E-matters discovered a bug in CVS version 1.11.4 and lower, that can give malignant users remote root access. The exploit was confirmed on BSD, but other OS's like Linux, Solaris and Windows are vulnerable too. A security advisory can be found here and there is also a patch available. CVS version 1.11.5 which is fixed can be downloaded as well." -
Emigrating DVD's?
RenHoek asks: "I found the love of my life on the internet, and I'm about to emigrate from the Netherlands to the USA. This leaves me with a big problem. My carefully collected DVD's are region 2 (Europe) and the USA is region 1. So except for buying a new DVD player (220 volts in Europe, 110 in the USA) does this also mean I have to sell my entire DVD collection here, and try to buy everything together in the US? It would seem I have a legal right to watch my legally bought DVDs, but region locking prohibits this, and circumventing region locking carries stiff penalties. Emailing the MPAA resulted in deafening silence. So what does the slashdot community advise? Should I follow the new American dream and start suing the moment I enter the US for the fact that the MPAA is either taking away my rights, or forcing me into a DMCA crime?" Thank god there are regionless DVD players! For those who don't know about them, which ones do you recommend and where are the best places to buy them? -
New Version of MindsEye
Ryan Morgan wrote in to tell us that a new version of MindsEye- a 3d modeller for *nix was released this morning. There are binaries available if you want 'em. Check out their web site and their ftp site if you want to download them. I've never tried this program, but I may give it a whirl this weekend.
