Re:You Do sell your information
Well, if you don't mind an auto-generated name
(i.e. auto#####) you can have an email account
at hushmail
without giving up any personal information. -
Re:Vaporware?
I was largely skeptical of the Sealand datahaven until I read that Ryan Lackey was the CTO.
This fella is one of the Financial Cryptography folks in Anguilla, along with Vince Cate. Some of the folks who sponsor the FC symposia include Zero Knowledge, E-Gold, and Hushmail.
I don't know about you guys, but when one of that trust-web is involved in something to do with liberty/cypherpunk/finance, I lend it more credence.

Re:What about SlashDot's censorship?Slashdot is a private enterprise, not a government operation, so it can censor anything it wants to. Same for AOL, which is not a government-funded operation, but rather a private business(yeah, I know they both sell public stock, but you can CHOOSE to fund them this way(or not), as opposed to having an IRS to come haul your ass off to jail if you don't cough it up for them.) Similarly, as with the recent garbage with AOL being sued by the blind, if AOL wants to risk alienating any particular segment of potential customers, that is always its perogative.

Re:End Of Days slamfest?Actually, I kinda thought Katz made it sound pretty cool, despite himself. Methinks he's just trying to impress us with his "this stuff is below my intellectuallity" huff and puff. C'mon, every movie ain't gotta be some profound statement on Life, the Universe, and Everything. I like a movie with a complex and well thought out plot too sometimes, but sometimes, I just want to see shit blow up and people die, too. (No, I''m not a homicidal psycho, movies aren't real you know
:-)Remember Waterworld? That movie had a plot thinner than piss on a platter with holes in it bigger than garage doors(it's been so long Kevin's grown neck-gills, yet an oil tanker's still floating around and hasn't gotten a hole rusted through the hull yet?) but it was still fun just to admire all the outrageously expensive backdrops.

Secure Web Mail analysisI've mentioned Hushmail as a secure alternative to Hotmail before... It seems there are still some concerns. Here is Bruce Schneier's analysis. Also interesting is HushMail's reply. (Hey, Hushmail uses Blowfish!)
Also noteworthy is that HushMail released their source code.
If you ask me, it beats Hotmail hands down.

Secure Web mailI find it amusing that it would come to this. Hotmail keeps saying in TV ads that they're "perfectly secure and private" because they prompt you for a PASSWORD when you try to access your mailbox. Whatever means was used to crack Hotmail, I think it's a good thing. It will make people realise a system is not secure because the company hosting it says so.
This reminds me of Bruce Schneier's saying: There are two kinds of security: the one that will keep your sister out, and the one that will keep the Government out. Guess which Hotmail is. And nowadays, I've known 14 year-old female hackers, so Hotmail is probably not even secure against your little sister.
:)On a side-note, secure Web-based, free Email does exist. I urge everyone to visit HushMail for Email with a real security. At least their encryption isn't just XOR-based.
