Now I know why ICraveTV was shut down...
I've been reading some reports that, thanks to NBC's time delay scheme, a lot of border towns like Detroit and Buffalo will be tuning into CBC's live coverage instead. Now, if IcraveTV was still operating, just think of the Olympics viewership NBC would lose to others who can't pick up the terrestrial signals...
-
if anything needed an IP address...it would be a TiVo. I can see myself recording TV shows at home, then streaming them to myself at work. I really hate the fact that I never get home in time to catch The Simpsons.
I miss being able to access iCraveTV, but the ability to pick and choose anything from my local cable provider would be even better!

icravetv.com
does neone else think that this could cause a few hiccups for future AV innovations akin to those of icravetv.com.
oh the other hand, in the not so distant future i can easily imagine a unified network for all information/entertainment/etc. admittedly, this would be of some use when utilizing a dumb terminal type setup (akin to Citrix) over a broad network. maybe even the internet.

I STILL think iCraveTV will lose.
STANDARD DISCLAIMER: IANAL, nor a Canadian.
For those who think simple rebroadcasting of content available over the airwaves in Canada is legal for anybody, show me the section of the CRTC's laws that make it so.
I read through the information the CRTC has on its Web site. They explicitly mention that they will not regulate the Internet, even though some content may be considered broadcasting.
If iCraveTV used cable, or a larger antenna, or some other telecommunications device to rebroadcast, I believe that they could do it, but they would need a license from the CRTC first.
Now, this is rebroadcasting, but it's over the Internet. The CRTC does not, and claims it never will, regulate the Internet. So what does that mean? Can companies rebroadcast freely over the Internet without a license, or does that mean that they do not have that right at all seperate from the CRTC granting it?
What if iCrave were to apply for a license to rebroadcast? That would force the CRTC to make a decision one way or the other.
Oh wait, this is being prosecuted in the US, where the matter is more clear-cut! I really don't understand why. This is supposedly a Canadian company, right? Unless...
Interesting... I can't find information on TVRadio Now Corporation, who owns the copyright on the web page. And there's nothing to do there either except click on ad banners.
You can get to the nav bar by going to http://www.icravetv.com/nav.html. Interestingly, there's no physical address located anywhere. Didn't check the feed to see if it was still up -- I don't know any Toronto area codes anyway. -
Watch it here ...
For Norwegians and the rest of the world who isn't within range of US/Canada...
http://www.icravetv.com, then tune to WKBW 7. ... while you still can (Lawsuit pending) ;-)

Cut the problem at the sourceHere at the University of Waterloo (Canada) I think they have found the right solution.
The whole piracy policing issue is complex and the kinks are still being figured out, hence this is probably not the best base for creating rules.
If the problem is bandwidth put in limits on bandwidth. It can't be that hard technically because my school manages to do it. People on ResNet have a quota for the term. If bandwidth overload is the problem then this is the proper solution. Messing with Address/Port blocking is just asking for people to develop workarounds. A simple bandwidth quota system is far simpler.
It's also interesting to note that UW has a comprehensive statement to govern the use of computing and network resources.
The quotas are 2500MB for a term with a max of 150Mb per day. All I know is that I'm glad I'm off campus with ADSL because my usage for two days is 1.1GB. Gotta love iCraveTV when you don't have cable.

An attempt at FactsAfter watching the beginning of this thread and getting annoyed by clueless posts I'm going to make a stab here.
First off lets get some definitions straight.
Patents and copyrights are two very different things. Patents apply to a specific method of doing some task. They need to be applied for in order to receive one. Copyrights apply to artistic/creative works. Somehow source code is covered as an artistic work. So here, movies and TV shows are covered by copyright. Copyright is much easier to obtain than a Patent. Any discussion of patents with regard to iCraveTV is probably irrelevant. In general copyrighted material is completely controlled by the holder. The copyright holder can allow anything they want. A license is just another contract.
In the case of an average TV program, the producer sells a license to the station or network allowing the network to broadcast the show. The network pays for this privilege and in return hopes to get ad revenue.
Now the broadcaster must follow the rules of the regulator. In the case of Canada this is the CRTC. In the US it is the FCC. I don't know how conflicts between the broadcaster's governmental license and the copyright license are resolved. I guess that would be the interesting part of these law suits. When the broadcaster transmits a signal under license of the CRTC, they are agreeing to play by the rules of the CRTC. This is another key point.
Under Canadian Broadcasting rules people are allowed to rebroadcast other transmissions in their entirety. Unfortunately I have not been able to find the exact regulations that permit this however I am yet to see anything contrary. This is the single most important part of this lawsuit so don't forget it!
So what do we have? An agreement between the producer and the original broadcaster. An agreement between the CRTC and the broadcaster and rules published by the CRTC that allow iCraveTV to rebroadcast. Strictly speaking iCraveTV is following the rules.
It is also very important to note that the President of iCraveTV is no slouch. From the iCraveTV original Press Release it states how the leadership of iCraveTV is well experienced in the TV broadcast industry, including Government (CRTC?) experience.
What I don't understand is why the US objectioners filed the lawsuits in Pennsylvania. AFAIK Pennsylvania has no jurisdiction over iCraveTV. If anyone can answer this I would be interested.
Bottom line is that we have a Canadian company following legal Canadian actions that conflict with the copyright licenses of traditional broadcasters. The interesting part will be how this conflict will be resolved.

Totally Legal
Canadian copyright law ALLOWS icravetv.com to do its live rebroadcasting. These companies should be suing the Canadian government if they think somethings wrong with this (harmless) approach, not http://www.icravetv.com.

Medium != Content
The airwaves may be owned by the public; and if you could somehow re-broadcast "airwaves", maybe you'd be right.
But sorry, ICraveTV isn't rebroadcasting "airwaves"... they're broadcasting "movies", "shows", and "advertisements", none of which "belong" to the public just for the use of a public communications vehicle. (Or does the public own your car, because you used it on public roads?)
And they do offer advertising arrangements... sounds like alteration to me if you're adding ads, even if they're not "in the program"... I sure don't see banner ads on TV when I watch it. -
Monday update: iCraveTV must cease and desist @5pmThe TV stations being broadcast by iCraveTV sent a "cease and desist" order. iCraveTV is ordered to cease broadcasting at 5pm today; hoever, iCraveTV sez they won't do it. Some relevant articles:

Go gadget CBC!Regardless of the copyright law issue, this is great. I'm a former Torontonian now in Tennessee. Lets face it, I won't see any Leafs games on ESPN til playoff time. Only way I can currently keep on top of whats happening in Leaf-dom is via www.canoe.ca's hockey page . Now I'll be able to watch Don Cherry, Ron McLean etal on Hockey Night In Canada on CBC Toronto.
Kudos to iCraveTV.com for this most excellent site.
