Re:It is already happening in the USA
Clinton supports Resolution 16 / 18. The resolution is an improvement over previous anti-blasphemy laws, but its goals are still incompatible with free speech principles. And the resolution effectively strongly favors the organized, monotheistic religions over other world views. It basically throws non-believers under a truck. And it's quite telling that the resolution is favored so much by Islamic nations.
The way I read it, the Indonesian government would likely consider actions against atheist statements to be within what Resolution 16 / 18 permits and encourages.

Re:OH MY GOD, it's American!@#!@#! Lulzzz
As much as I despise ICANN, it has never, to my knowledge, been accused of child abuse the way the United Nations has been.
Why do you use an article about how the Vatican are accused of child abuse as an example of how the UN are accused of child abuse?

OH MY GOD, it's American!@#!@#! Lulzzz
You know, honestly, I have nothing to say about this story, other than ICANN is a bunch of sonofabitches who should enjoy CO2 gas leaks while sleeping in their 5-star hotel rooms. So I'll just comment on the non-story story.
First of all, ICANN as a group is a bunch of people who should have CO2 let into their 5-star hotel rooms while they sleep. I will leave the explanation and justification of this to others who have had first-hand experiences at the hands of ICANN.
Secondly, after reading Wikipedia for so long, the words [citation needed] automatically appear in my head after a phrase like "While some people finding it frightening that a US corporation controls names usage on the Internet". Some people? Who are they, exactly? Can we get a quote from one of them? OMG IT'S AMERIKKKAN CORPRATION DROPPING DEMOCRACY BOMBS OMG RUN FOR THE HILLS MABEL. Come on, this isn't the New York Times here, we need fact-checking by objective observers.
"the prospect of a UN body assuming control raises its own concerns."
Damn straight it does. As much as I despise ICANN, it has never, to my knowledge, been accused of child abuse the way the United Nations has been (warning, the previous website may be blocked based on the human rights attitude of your country or your employer). -
Humanists (Amsterdam declaration)
Maybe this helps in the discussion: http://www.iheu.org/amsterdamdeclaration.
2 Humanism is rational.
It seeks to use science creatively, not destructively. Humanists believe that the solutions to the world's problems lie in human thought and action rather than divine intervention. Humanism advocates the application of the methods of science and free inquiry to the problems of human welfare. But Humanists also believe that the application of science and technology must be tempered by human values. Science gives us the means but human values must propose the ends.
Maybe rationality is just something to strive for. ("advocates the application of" instead of "applies")

Re:Stop it
"While he was on bail for the first charges, he then molested and killed another girl. The investigation took YEARS for the murder, because" some dumb-ass let him out on bail, which is why the murder happened at all. The more highly-emotionally charged the example, the more important it is to carefully analyze where the flaws in system allowed for a repeat offense. Protecting someone's rights, must by definition always be right.
I don't think Google would be wrong in complying with a search warrant (or the Brazilian equivalent) but I do think it would be wrong for them to open up everyones account for the purposes of data mining for pedophiles. Imagine if the data was stored in everyone's homes instead of stored with Google, search warrants naming individuals could be used to search their home PCs. Data mining would be cops going door-to-door searching everyone's PC in order to find which people are pedophiles. The heinousness of pedophilia would not excuse the violation of a nationwide door-to-door search of everyone's home computers and it does not excuse the mining of storage that was presented as and expected to be, private. -
Re:understandably? So its understandable that we will start enforcing our concept of morality on others right off the bat?
Remember, morality is relative.OLPC is a state-subsidized educational program for children.
If you want OLPC to succeed you do not create problems in the classroom, you do not embarrass its local sponsors.
Nigeria is a mix of Islam, evangelical Protestant, conservative Catholic, and tribal religion. Tolerance of pornography - and the exposure of children to pornography - doesn't figure prominently in any one of them.
Porn on the Internet is framed in terms of the Western stereotypes of the dominant male and the subservient [often promiscuous] female. In the Nigerian setting, this comes at a price:
Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa. It is a country on the brink of an AIDS disaster. And its dominant religions - traditional religion, Christianity, and Islam - all proclaim the superiority of males to females. These three aspects are closely linked.
In traditional Nigerian society, there is no separation between the laws governing secular and spiritual spheres. What the gods say is sanctioned by society and forms the norms of the community. They cannot be challenged, especially by women. This divinely ordained male dominance forms the ultimate basis of patriarchal entrenchment in Nigerian culture.
The siege of patriarchy encompasses all spheres in Nigerian society including practices like female genital mutilation, child marriage, widow inheritance, rape, and polygamy. Talk about sex is considered immoral; sexual issues are not open to discussion. This secrecy surrounding sexual relations, combined with the religious and cultural expectations that subjugate women, largely explains women's vulnerability to HIV/AIDS in the country. No effort to curb the spread of AIDS in Nigeria can afford to ignore the influence of religion and culture. Women in Nigeria: Religion, Culture, and AIDS [2002]On a fundamental level, Christians and Muslims in Nigeria have similar views on the why HIV continues to spread: both groups see promiscuous behavior as the root cause of the HIV crisis. Promiscuity is frowned upon heavily because of religious teachings and because of underlying cultural traditions within Nigerian society. Even before Christianity and Islam were introduced, Nigerian cultural tradition emphasized the importance of sexual discretion and believed that sex should be reserved for marriage. Leaders in both the Christian and Muslim communities discourage their followers from pre-marital and extra-marital sex, and teach that procreation is the main reason for sex. Re:What I'd like to know...
Google has already refused so I guess we know where they stand.
Our parliment has started censoring itself, so I'm not sure where they stand. Unfortunately we don't have a bill of rights.
