James Morris writes "NIST has announced the AES finalists for round two. (AES is new data encryption scheme intended to replace DES). The finalists are MARS (IBM), RC6 (RSA), Rijndael (Joan Daemen and Vincent), Serpent (Ross Anderson, Eli Biham and Lars Knudsen) and Twofish (Bruce Schneier and friends). " While this is the second round, the choosing of a finalist it still quite aways off. -
SCO CEO Calls Red Hat a Fraud
James Morris writes "A story at Newswire reports that SCO CEO Doug Michels considers Red Hat selling Linux to be 'a Fraud' because it was developed freely. Sounds like he forgot his medication again. " I suppose it's an interesting point-but I think the angle SCO takes is a probably a wee bit different. -
Hump Day Quickies
Stephen Adler wrote a follow up to his article on the Slashdot Effect on the Meta Slashdot Effect. Its the effect of the article about the effect. I found it funny. Cheshire Cat sent us a link to Allcam.com which is a Yahoo-style page devoted solely to web cams. James Morris sent us a link to Linux Australia which has another tux logo. Jeff Hartmann sent us a link to a cute little Ice Penguin from Michigan Technological University's Winter Carnival '99. Surprised someone sobered up long enough to make it. MTU has a great campus though they need something besides snow cows. netweasel sent us a link to an Apple Ad that you will like. Patrik Rådman sent us a "pootified" version of slashdot. Adam Muntner sent us something that we all need: Virtual Crack zzg sent us a link to a bizarre page of cool stuff like ion guns and plasma pens (oh my) -

WebDAV Apache Module
James Morris writes "Greg Stein has just announced the availability of a fledgling open source DAV Apache module. The timing of this is priceless, following the Microsoft Halloween Document, which stated, under the heading "Beating Linux" (read OSS): "Linux's homebase is currently commodity network and server infrastructure. By folding extended functionality (e.g. Storage+ in file systems, DAV/POD for networking) into today's commodity services, we raise the bar & change the rules of the game." And under "Blunting OSS attacks": "DAV is complex and the protocol spec provides an infinite level of implementation complexity for various applications (e.g. the design for Exchange over DAV is good but certainly not the single obvious design). Apache will be hard pressed to pick and choose the correct first areas of DAV to implement." " -
Coldfusion for Linux
Recently many people have been asking for a port of Coldfusion to Linux. Allaire has just announced it will do just that. Thanks Jeremy! There is no definite release date yet since Coldfusion relies on third party products which will have to be ported or replaced. Note that this port came about because of user demand. You have a voice: use it! Thanks to Svartalf, James Morris, M1m3R, and xtra. -

Rob Clears Out His Mailbox
So it's thursday night, my last exam is neatly folded up and sitting next to my back pack. I've got my pipe, a beer and my laptop, and my email box is flooded. So now I play catchup on a week of sluffing off. Hit the link below to read a list of cool stuff that I really want to mention... First, James Morris sent me Top 0x10 Signs You're an Internet Nerd. It's pretty funny.Alexei V. Novikov wrote in to tell us about a Linux index ala Yahoo that he's been working on. You can see it here. He's looking for people to help make it grow.
Patrick Berry sent us a link to a Cartoon about a geek. I kinda dig it.
Todd Martin wrote in to tell us that LCDProc has been updated Here. It looks like I will be getting at least one of these, so look forward to a Slashdot Headline client for it *grin*.
Lastly we have a Stupid JavaScript Trick that you can check out Here. It's actually a nearly playable side scroller Mario-esque game, written entirely in JavaScript. Thanks to Garrett LeSage for hooking us up with it.
Now I bid you farewell. One of my roommates has ordered a shot of whiskey to all of the living room inhabitants. The laptops are all shoved aside as Rob grab's his Cartman Shot Glass and a bottle of Jim Beam.
