Compaq Itsy Usability movies
Jón Ragnarsson writes "Compaq Western Research Lab has put some movies of the Itsy running Doom, Java, X and other stuff... The ARM CPU still amazes me after all those years... " My love affair with the itsy goes way back to stories that we posted years ago. I even saw one at the 98 LinuxExpo. This is the box that we always wish would be mass produced, but just doesn't seem to ever get any closer. Its still cool tho. -
Java 2 for Linux Released & Blackdown Gets Creds
burner writes, "After quite a wait, JDK1.2.2 is released for Linux. You can grab the final release from Sun's site. Sun has also put up bios for the Blackdown guys. Sun's been acting pretty flippy lately, but this is great news. I've been using Blackdown's latest release candidates lately, and they're excellent, but now there's a final release. Nice work guys! The Network is the Car
An anonymous reader sent us a little JavaSoft PR Bit about Java integrated into a concept car. It's mostly full of your usual "Ra-Ra Change the World" kinda stuff you might expect, but it has a few interesting notes (Using wireless ether, Ricochet, and a cel modem to provide different bandwidth streams depending on location, the fact that the machine could be ported to Linux, the fact that it could download MP3s to cars) so its actually kinda interesting. -

Jini to be open source
mukesh agrawal writes "I'm surprised that this hasn't been played up much. But from the FAQ, it looks like JINI will be open source.
"Q: How will Jini technology be licensed?
A: To drive innovation for the vision of Jini and to gain rapid acceptance in the market the Jini source code will be open to the developer community, similar to Netscape's Mozilla model and Linux's GPL. To guarantee compatibility and quality a mark for commercial products is being considered. The specific details around the licensing model are still being finalized. A draft of the proposed license will be available in August. " " Very cool-good to see that Sun has seen the light of day. Yeah, so the pun's bad-what I can I do? -
Pressuring Sun for a JDK/Linux Port
It's happening again! Sun bug list has a new bug for people to vote on and A Linux Port is on the list. It has recieved hundreds of votes already, but if you want an official Linux JDK port, go express your opinion. This happened before, but with no success, but perhaps this time we can drum up enough votes to convince Sun that Linux has earned it. -
Java Linux Port
Fate wrote in to tell us that Java Developer's Parade has a Java Linux Port listed as the number one bug, and many requests for an officially supported JDK port as well. The site requires registration, but if you want to register your vote, it's worth it. -
Freeing up Java
Zooko Journeyman writes " Dave Winer wrote an article suggesting that JavaSoft could open the source to Java. Wednesday he had an e-mail exchange with Bill Joy in which Bill Joy argues against opening the source."
