Re:Taser-happy cops
That's a pretty amazing story. Also, had no idea the King was tasered, but I was able to confirm that as well.
Crazy stuff. Thanks for that. -
Re:50 deceased persons voted in the last election? You cute partisans with your black/white narrow world view. How about Voters Outreach of America if you want the most recent campaign. How about the Katherine Harris/DBT Online scrubbing of democrat voters off of the 2000 Florida voter rolls? Try going back a hundred years or more and see how Hayes stole the 1876 election from Tilden, or how Harrison won in 1888 in something eerily similar to the Swift Boat lies and tactics. You can find all sorts of democrat scenarios too (take "Landslide Lyndon" in 1948, for example). So what? Why do you imply only democrats cheat?
People like you are the reason we get stuck in quagmires or believe that lying about an affair is worth impeachment while lying about bringing our country to war is just partisian attacks.

Re:Its All About Helping the Cognitively Challange
it doesn't matter how smart you are when shit like this happens
this may help stupid people to vote (which i have nothing against) but more importantly it stops corrupt election officials from derailing (even more so) the democratic process. -
Gotta love that false balance...
BOTH parties you say? Nonsense. Show me anything even close to what the Republicans are currently doing.
The facts are (just a brief snippet really)
SPROUL & ASSOCIATES is directly financed by the RNC. Nathan Sproul is reported as the director of the Arizona Christian Coalitition.
The Charlston Gazette reported on 8/20 Sproul & Associates in West Virginia started a voter registration campaign where ONLY republicans were registered -- not Democrats -- apparently in violation of the West Virginia law. (The article is reported here).
There have been reports posted on the internet from Pennsylvania (on September 17) and Maryland (on September 16) of the the same organization -- Sproul & Associates -- pretending to be workers from the non-partisan America Votes, and registering ONLY Republicans. To obtain locations to set up shop, Sproul and Associates apparently lied to puiblic librarians about being non-partisan. (The internet postings, that took place on a librarian network, are reported here.
On September 22, Sproul and Associates did the same thing in Oregon. This is a plain violation of Oregon law, according to Oregon Secretary of State Bill Bradbury in an interview with Northwest Cable News. See here. It also appears that another Republican group engaged in "bait and switch registration", at least according to the Daily Vanguard.
A few days ago, CBS reported that an organization in Nevada called Voters Outreach America was THROWING OUT registration forms filled out by people trying to register to vote as Democrats. The American Prospect has reported that Voters Outreach America is under contract with Sproul & Associates.
And then, of course, there is the widely-reported story from South Dakota, where the nephew of Thune, the Republican challenger to Tom Daschle, has been caught fraudulently obtaining absentee ballots for Republicans. A criminal investigation is pending. Top Republicans have been forced to resign.
What it appears here is that there are reliable reports of GOP operatives in at least SIX states engaging in sytematic and repeated attempts at voter fraud. From only registering republicans, to falsifying absentee ballot requests, to destroying democratic voter applications, this appears to be a coordinated effort at all levels to swing the election illegally to the Republicans. In fact, things are so bad that former SD goveror Janklow has issued a public statement saying that the national GOP is encouraging voter fraud.
So, sorry, it's not both parties. It's the Republicans. Show me anything comparable done by Democrats, and I'll eat my own shit and vote shit, err... Bush.

Re:How is this "voter intimidation"?
The Oregon report said one person "might" have seen 8-10 registrations shredded and another "might" have been encouraged to do so.
The second one references the same people as the first one (same individual, at least).
The third is a woman who says she was told to do something, by people who deny it, and never saw it happen.
Oh- the people accused deny it, and "never saw it happen!" That settles it then!
Your insinuation- that this is somehow nothing but hearsay, and that these are just mean Democrats making this stuff up about Sproul in Oregon- is laughable. The similar claims being made about him in Nevada are supported by physical evidence. He has been running this scam in multiple swing states.
Since you seem to be so insanely insistant I chastise the RNC, I will admit that if any of these cases are proven legitimate then the firms responsible should be held accountable. That's a long, long shot from the RNC itself being guilty of voter fraud.
You should do some Google searches before posting. The firm in question (Sproul & Associates) was directly funded by the RNC to the tune of $488,000. The RNC is guilty of voter fraud.
And it seems the people who had their forms ripped up by RNC workers will not be allowed to re-register. A Republican judge this morning had told the two parties in the case to work out a compromise, which they apparently did. Hours later, the court reconvened and she denied the petition without hearing any arguments- reasoning that if a law was broken, the guilty party would be punished, end of story. The local news video about it is here. -
Re:How is this "voter intimidation"?
I've read about a single case involving less than 100 Democrats' registrations being ripped up. Can you cite references to the thousands? Honest question, I just haven't read about that many.
Would it matter if I did? If you had a strong suspicion that the GOP were actively encouraging vote fraud, I expect that you would avert your gaze or seek to justify it. If there is one thing I have learned about modern conservatives it is that they have wholly abdicated any and all responsiblity and morality.
Nonetheless.
GOP fraud in Oregon, GOP fraud in Arizona, Nevada (another), and so forth and so on. Look for yourself, not that I expect you to actually meaningfully CRITICIZE the GOP.

Re:!FP?
Pudge, you need to watch time points 1:50 through 2:50. There are several confirming facts given. It looks to me like the GOP treats Democrats the same way you treat your "Foes".

Re:List of this groups backers. MAJOR GOP SUPPORTE
A GOP funded organization stole the name from the real America Votes to help perpetuate this fraud. Aside from disenfranchising dozens? hundreds? thousands? of Democrats I think one of the biggest tragedies is that the real, non-partisan America Votes will be hurt by this. I don't blame you for being confused, that was the point.

Text:
(Oct. 12) -- Employees of a private voter registration company allege that hundreds, perhaps thousands of voters who may think they are registered will be rudely surprised on election day. The company claims hundreds of registration forms were thrown in the trash.
Anyone who has recently registered or re-registered to vote outside a mall or grocery store or even government building may be affected.
The I-Team has obtained information about an alleged widespread pattern of potential registration fraud aimed at Democrats. The focus of the story is a private registration company called Voters Outreach of America, AKA America Votes.
The out-of-state firm has been in Las Vegas for the past few months, registering voters. It employed up to 300 part-time workers and collected hundreds of registrations per day, but former employees of the company say that Voters Outreach of America only wanted Republican registrations.
Two former workers say they personally witnessed company supervisors rip up and trash registration forms signed by Democrats.
"We caught her taking Democrats out of my pile, handed them to her assistant and he ripped them up right in front of us. I grabbed some of them out of the garbage and she tells her assisatnt to get those from me," said Eric Russell, former Voters Outreach employee.
Eric Russell managed to retrieve a pile of shredded paperwork including signed voter registration forms, all from Democrats. We took them to the Clark County Election Department and confirmed that they had not, in fact, been filed with the county as required by law.
So the people on those forms who think they will be able to vote on Election Day are sadly mistaken. We attempted to speak to Voters Outreach but found that its office has been rented out to someone else.
The landlord says Voters Outreach was evicted for non-payment of rent. Another source said the company has now moved on to Oregon where it is once again registering voters. It's unknown how many registrations may have been tossed out, but another ex-employee told Eyewitness News she had the same suspicions when she worked there.
It's going to take a while to sort all of this out, but the immediate concern for voters is to make sure you really are registered.
Call the Clark County Election Department at 455-VOTE orclick here to see if you are registered.
The company has been largely, if not entirely funded, by the Republican National Committee. Similar complaints have been received in Reno where the registrar has asked the FBI to investigate. -

NFL = No Fun League
First the NFL says NO to ads for Las Vegas during the superbowl. Then CBS says NO to ads against Bush during the game. The NFL says NO WAY to Casinos in las vegas showing the game on anything bigger than a 55" TV. They say its copyright law, but last I checked copyright law didnt say anything about TV Size. Its just the NFL's arbitrary size. The Palms was planning to show it on their huge movie theater screens. Oh well, I guess the NFL doesnt like its superbowl party being upstaged by Vegas. Now they're just taking their ball and going back to Houston. Paul Tagliabue caused lots of casinos to lose lots of money because of the NFL's childlike behavior. Hello, only so many people can go to the game! What are the rest supposed to do, wait outside and be happy they're near the game?? Paul also threatened the players with fines or possibly suspensions for "excessive celebration" during the Superbowl.
The NFL is definately the No Fun League. -

Too Busy
The FBI will be too busy for this sort of thing anyway, with Harassing people around Area51

Re:problems
FUD. This is already not true.
Check out the prime time lineup from CBS or ABC. They are already broadcasting a large percentage of High Definition programs. NBC is coming along a bit more slowly, but moving in the right direction...
What the networks do means bugger-all if your local stations haven't upgraded their equipment. Here in Las Vegas, only one station is broadcasting in HD, and they're probably doing that only because they're owned by CBS (and not merely an affiliate).

Re:And no, its not a a piece of flamebait.
I dont know of a single person, anywhere, that owns a digital television.
You do now. I bought one last month, and so did a friend of mine. Another friend bought his last year; he kind of opened the flood gates for us. I watched the SuperBowl in January, 2001, in HD at another friend's place. He's our early adopter.
I'm not sure where you live or what kind of friends you have, but HDTV is more common than you realize.
It all depends on where you are and what's available locally. I know someone with a HD-capable monitor (60" widescreen Toshiba), but he hasn't bothered getting a HD receiver to go with it. There's only one HD broadcaster in town ATM, and while I'm sure that JAG in HD is nice, it's not thousands-of-dollars nice. The widescreen capability ends up only getting used with DVDs. As for me, I have a 27" Akai (the one with a widescreen mode that squishes the vertical scan) that plays anamorphic DVDs at full resolution and cost less than $400. It works well enough for me.
