Politics: Harry, The Disastrous & The Unpalatable

According to this article, 25% of citizens 18-24 cannot name both major party presidential candidates and 70% cannot name their running mates. Wow. This discussion at Quorum.org (disclaimer: a site I co-founded) questions whether online forums (like this one) can help make politics more accessible or whether it's going to take structural change in Washington before it gets any better. What's the point of the $200 mm spent on advertising if they can't even get unaided brand recall?" For whose pathologically opposed to the letter "W," CaptainZ asserts that "This guy [Jamin Raskin] over at MSN has a pretty good article about how Nader and Gore can both 'win.'" MP3/CD Players Reviewed
nd writes "It seems the MP3 CD players (previously thought to be complete vaporware after literally years of delays) are finally starting to hit the market. IGN has posted a review comparing the Mambo-X vs. MPTrip. Both players are discman-like in appearance, and play CDR/CDRW's containing MP3 files." -
AMD's New Thunderbird Articles & Benchmarks

Tom's Hardware's coverage (in German) is here , a translation to English is here - Anandtech also covered the new CPU release. For those of you who want to learn more about the Thunderbird, here is an interview with AMD on the processor release. Overall, the Thunderbird is performing quite well, and will be sold at the same price as current Athlons. " -
Proposal For Open-Source Benchmarks
nd writes: "Van Smith from Tom's Hardware has written a proposal that calls for open source benchmarking. He talks about the need for increasing the objectivity of benchmarking. The proposal is basically to develop a suite of open-source benchmarking tools and new methodologies. It's a rather dramatic column, as he discusses Transmeta, bias towards Intel, among other things. " Well, once you get through the inital umpteen pages of preamble, the generically named A Modest Proposal is the actual point. Interesting idea - but I shall weep for the passing of bogo-MIPs as the definitive measure of system performance. *grin*
