Japanese Gamers, Retailers, Developers Sum Up 2003
Thanks to Game Science for their news story compiling the results of an end-of-year survey in Japanese videogame magazine Famitsu. Among the intriguing results: the most popular game of 2003 for readers was Namco's GameCube RPG Tales Of Symphonia, with another GC title, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, coming in second, and Square's Final Fantasy X-2 for PS2 was voted the most disappointing title of the year. Elsewhere, game developers and shops voted Western-developed Grand Theft Auto III the game that "sold better than your expectations", and Square Enix's Final Fantasy XII is the most-awaited Japanese title of 2004 among developers, retailers, and gamers, with that company's Dragon Quest VIII firmly ensconced in second place. Finally, as an aside, the Game Science site has collected a neat conglomeration of Happy New Year postcards from Japanese game developers. -
Dragon Warrior VIII Details Revealed
Thanks to GamePro for their article discussing new details about Square Enix's long-awaited Dragon Quest VIII, as revealed in a recent issue of Japanese magazine Shonen Jump. According to the article, this latest in the massively selling Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior series, due for Japanese PS2 in 2004, will have battles "..rendered in full 3D, a marked departure from the static fight screens in the last seven games. Despite this new technology, though, the Dragon Quest-iness of the game will remain untouched - early screenshots show the hero picking up barrels and peering into random dressers for items." Although new in-game shots aren't yet online, the single previously released screenshot is very reminiscent of external developer Level 5's other signature titles such as Dark Cloud 2 and the forthcoming Xbox MMORPG, True Fantasy Live Online. -

True Fantasy Live Online Confirmed For US
Thanks to an anonymous reader for passing on news from Gamerfeed that the Xbox MMORPG True Fantasy Live Online has been confirmed for US release. This Microsoft-published title is being made by Japanese developers Level 5, the developers of Dark Cloud and its sequel for Sony, who are also currently working on Dragon Quest VIII for SquareEnix. Level 5 have a small official product page, albeit mainly in Japanese, with concept art and screenshots available, and there are more screenshots at RPGRadar. This is one of Xbox's rivals to Everquest and Final Fantasy for PS2, and is also interesting because Microsoft have grabbed a prominent Japanese developer to do it for them. -
