Happy Birthday, KDE
KS writes: "Well, today, July 12, 2000 makes exactly 2 years since KDE 1.0 was released. It seems like forever. LinuxPlanet has a nice overview of the event and progress since then." It's amazing how much progress Linux has made in the last few years. -
GPL To Be Tested In Court?
KevinReichard to plug the interview on his site with Eben Moglen. "The general counsel to the Free Software Foundation tells us that the GPL may be tested as early as this summer, as the FSF debates whether to sue a major software house over violations to the GPL. The lawsuit, if it takes place, would be the first major test of the GPL in court. Obviously the legal status of the GPL is a prime issue to the Open Source and Free Software communities. " -

Sneak Preview of CorelDraw 9 for Linux
A reader writes "Michael Hall of LinuxPlanet wrote a pretty nifty review of CorelDraw 9 for Linux. He's a mondo GIMP fan, but he's still saying nice things about CorelDraw, kinda sorta." -
When Volunteer And Commercial Developers Don't Mesh
An "Anonymous" but easily identifiable person submitted a commercial about a story at LinuxPlanet about what happens when Volunteers and Commercial Developers have different goals over what is good for the Linux Community.unity and how it might affect code. The article is largely about KDE and Corel. Please keep the flame turned down on this one, as it's a critical issue that still hasn't been solved. -
Experiences of Running Linux on a Mainframe
xneilj writes, "Linuxplanet has an interesting article where a guy decided to install the native Linux on the company mainframe in their lunch hour. Interesting article if you're wondering why anybody would pay seven figures for a box when you can get a high-end pc machine for a fraction of that. Author Scott Courtney reckons if you put Linux on it 'the mainframe of today may in fact be the best damned Web server you ever saw.' " -
Review of Corel Linux 1.1.2
With all of the recent hoopla over Corel Linux, it's going to be interesting to see the reviews of the download and retail versions of Corel Linux. And while we're on the subject of distributions, it should also be mentioned that Stormix has released Stormix Linux 2000. Note that both are based on Debian - what do people think about the new distros? -

Tutorial on Linux Device Drivers
vorsprung directed my attention span of a gnat to Linux Device Drivers Demystified, an interesting tutorial giving an overview of Linux device drivers (No kidding). As well, they've got devtective, a search facility to check any (Surprise!) devices you want to check to see if they are supported currently. Lastly, for those of you who really want to get into it, read the review of Linux Device Drivers. -

Generative Quickies
Time once again to clean up the submissions bin: First up, Georg C. F. Greve wrote in to tell us that the April issue of Brave GNU Word is up. As always, we have Linux websites popping up left and right: Michael wrote in to point us to LinuxPlanet for newbies, 23D sent us linuxartist.org for the non technical folks, and Popeye wrote in to show us The Linux Lounge for people who I guess want to sit. President John F. Kennedy wrote in to tell us that Propaganda for E is out if you need awesome (and gigantic) tilable background images. Frater 219 wrote in to say that ESR has updated the Jargon File to 4.1.1. Next up, some Slashdot ink: Shag hooked us up with a story about the Slashdot Effect taking down another site, Tomalak brought this Article about Slashdot in InternetWorld (thankfully there is no picture) and cgray wrote in with a link to an article about Jimmy Guterman experiencing the Slashdot Effect- except this one is mostly about the flame. Newton sent us www.ihatestarwars.com for those of you who are sick of the hype. jeth gave us a link to special agent Kimble a Flash Movie. The Wanderer submitted the Dysfunctional Faily Circus in response to last weeks quickie about the Circus reviews in Amazon. An anonyous reader sent us Goumet Ting's page. It looks exactly like my diet.
