NUON As Open Source Gaming Platform
jjustice writes: "About a month ago, Richard Miller, CEO of VM Labs, announced that "In the near future (I don't want to commit to a date until we are sure of it), we will release to the open development community the tools and documentation that were used to develop these titles - both the games and the movie enhancements. We will also release a few sample applications that can be freely downloaded from the Internet, burned onto CD-R discs, and run on NUON DVD players that can read CD-Rs. Currently only the N501 has this capability, but we anticipate that all future NUON based DVD players will read CD-R and DVD-R media." It's not Linux, but unlike Indrema, the boxes are available. And the technology may not rival PS2 or XBox, but he also says the latest version of the chip is 2-3 times the power of the existing model and cheaper to produce. Besides, I'll support any platform with games from Jeff Minter." No use for all those electronics going to waste, eh? -
Sun ending Netscape's "flirtation" with Linux?
Jon Abbott writes "From Robert X. Cringely's pulpit comes a story about Sun/Linux/Netscape. The probable broker for this Netscape-AOL deal is Sun, which gets to flesh-out its business application offerings with those of Netscape in return for a royalty to AOL. Sun puts no money up front for this software written by the very Netscape people who would have been otherwise laid-off. This product acquisition makes Sun the equal of Microsoft for Internet server software on all platforms, and serves the secondary purpose of ending Netscape's recent flirtation with Linux, an operating system that's scarier to Sun than Microsoft because Linux is FREE. Woohoo we're famous!
Jon Abbott writes "I know, this isn't the most *exciting* thing in the world, but hey it's cool. over at wombat.doc.ic.ac.uk, where they have the "Free On-line Dictionary of Computing", I've convinced them to add "slashdot effect" to the dictionary! They even bash IIS! :^) The definition can be found at: link " In humour of a somewhat different kind go here to see Microsoft's response to the Halloween documents ("The existence of these documents demonstrates the vigorous competition that exists in the OS industry.") and a gob-shot of that omnipresent Ed Muth. Thanks to Javier Alvarado for the link. -
Souped up RX7
frank sent us a link to another souped up car. While this one doesn't have an MP3 player, it is equipped with sonic whistles, paintball guns, rocket launchers and enough wacky toys to impress Macgyver. Or at least to cover him with paint. -
Monday's Quickies
John Hartnup sent us a Perl Script for tracking stuff that happens at Distributed.net. Speaking of Which, Slashdot has broken into the top 10 overall! Keep it going folks! Next, Matthew Kirkwood sent us a link to link to another linux support site. Third, Jesse Off sent us a link to another one of those silly You know you're a nerd when. Mostly Unix jokes. Pretty good. Next, Jason Poll sent us a link to a collection of online books, the site includes programming and Linux books apparently. Continuing along, David Sinck sent us a link to one of those James Bond super cars with fancy video doo dads. This one has instructions to build your own if you have tons of cash to drop on all sorts of strange hardware. It's really pretty cool. Lastly, Harry McKee sent us a link to an article about a Telepathic Clapper. Hopefully they can come up with an ad campaign less obnoxious than 'Clap On/Clap Off' -
Should Corporations Stay off the Net?
Jason Springer writes " I saw this article on USA Today . I suggest you read it to get the drift. I also suggest mentioning this story which I read on Wired which has to deal with Geffen's fight to destroy MP3s (the articles are quite related). I'm not sure if you have posted this before or not, but since I haven't seen it posted myself... well, anyway. Later. "
