This will not affect development of EazelThe article says very few developers were laid off; business and marketing departments suffered the largest cuts. I don't see how this is news -- the economy is in a minor depression obviously, eventually companies will be able to expand their staff.
Regardless, this is one of the major virtues of Open Source Software. If Eazel Inc. dies like the Maximum Linux magazine did, users of the software will most likely start an organization of former users who continue to develop Eazel. This is exactly what the Maximum Linux readers did -- formed Maximum Linux.org , to help support the community that would have else vanished.

boot & debianfor those of you who remember, boot beget Maximum PC which beget Maximum Linux. boot was the original tweaker's mag, with emphasis on getting what YOU wanted out of your computer (and pioneering the kick ass award). these guys did know what they were talking about, and the organization has a long history of supporting linux and promoting it. as evidence their November 97 CD included Debian (1.3 probably) on it and the issue itself was dedicated to installation & configuration of your brand-new linux box.
as with every other magazine on the planet you can't cater to all tastes, and the linux community is substantially more diverse then most. say what you will about Maximum Linux, the fact is these folk have been in this field for quite a while & their presence will be missed. fingers crossed, they'll end up as regular contributors to MaxPC. i for one appreciate the attempt & wish them the best of luck.

This has been out for a while
A few months ago, Maximum Linux magazine had an issue mostly about browsers. It included a CD with every browser you could imagine from Netscape Communicator to Microsoft Internet Explorer (which they claimed would run if you could get WINE to run it). As I recall, the CD also included (probably an earlier version) of the AIM Beta for Linux. I don't think I installed it, but I'm almost sure it was there! I think this has been around a while, but AOL didn't publicize it until now.

Faulty Logic
Ok, the guy's assertion, is that because the writer is getting a free copy of Mandrake, he's writing a glowing review of it, in hopes of getting another free copy.
This theory works if the software costs hundreds of dollars, like the software of certain competitors, but it doesn't hold up for mandrake, since the guy can already get that for free. Is the writer seriously saying that the books and extra garbage that comes in the boxed set is what is motivating a glowing review? What if they just sent him a CD-R. Heck, I got a copy of Mandrake with Maximum Linux this month. (Why would you subscribe if you don't already use it?) At any rate, the article's author is just full of shit, flat out. He wanted to write something that M$ advocates would suck on to like barnacles, and he did, but none of his points make any sense. No offense, but that article is total hack work (don't mean to crack on it's author, we all have to pick a position and fight it to write a good article sometimes I suppose, I remember college english.)

Correct links
ftp://ftp.maximumlinux.com/ TerminusDemoLinuxFull.tar.gz to get straight to the file; the article poster got the first 2 links wrong
:) And that's http://www.maximumlinux.com/ for the homepage, not http://ftp.maximumlinux.com/ ;-) -
