Lapsed Domain Name Fight Ruled Upon In Australia
Zaphus writes "The Age is reporting that a domain name fight in Australia in which a lapsed domain name was snapped up by another group with the same initials, has been ruled OK by the arbitrator. The Battle for .Web
Tripp Lilley writes "At FOCI: Friends Of a Competitive Internet, we've sent out this letter to a lot of folks interested in the battle for the .Web TLD in the ICANN New TLD Program. While ICANN's Criteria for Assessing TLD Proposals call for, among other things, "the enhancement of competition for registration services" and "enhance[ment] [of] the diversity of the DNS and of registration services generally", over one third of the proposals on the table come from a fascinatingly intertwined group of existing registries and registrars, including NSI, CORE, and Melbourne IT. (Oh, and before anyone flames me for not disclosing my affiliations, read the full disclosure that's been posted on the site and attached to the letter since we began)." -
Australian 'Net God' Refuses to Profit From IPO
Lansdowne writes "Robert Elz, a 'mildly eccentric' programmer in the CS department of Melbourne University and the administrator of the .au domain, refused to take part in last week's A$93 million IPO of Melbourne IT, the university's commercial arm. He has been quoted as saying that administrators should not financially benefit from registering domain names. Melbourne IT registers .com.au names as the Australian equivalent of NSI. Read the Sydney Morning Herald's story for the scoop. "
