Hidden advertisment
This smells like a hidden advertisment for "Web Performance Inc.". Now somebody please tell me why I should trust the results produced by a relatively unknown product and company, and not stick to proven tools like Borland SilkPerformer or Mercury Loadrunner.

Check out SiteScope & IPCheck
I used to work for a regional ISP and we used SiteScope with pretty good luck. They went a little crazy with their pricing several years back and it's more in line with some of the "Big Tools" pricing wise, but still easier to use. It has all sorts of built-in server monitors which will probably be of no use to you, but the SNMP section is quite extensible and the alerts are extremely flexible. It's at:

I am also now using a less expensive tool called IPCheck. The company also makes a not-free MRTG ripoff called PRTG that adds some features and functionality that a plain-jane MRTG installation doesn't have. Their URL is:

Mercury's Profiler
I prefer Mercury's profiler. Its for J2EE or
.NET applications but it integrates with Load Runner and Business Availabillity Center. There is a free trail here. -
Re:jetbrains dottrace profiler
Mercury Diagnostics Profiler. Which I believe you can download a free trial.

Mercury
Mercury has the premier testing tools, for both funcational and performance testing. For specific products check out Load Runner and Quick Test Professional.
I am not saying that these tools will replace a solid QA staff but they will increase the test coverage dramaticly and permit you to measure and manage quality and performance of your applications. Once you have used them, you can never go back. It makes that kind of difference. -

Tools
I have used a few tools, and like anything else it comes down to your proficiency with the language.
WinRunner http://www.mercury.com/ = Gotta know C++, and you better not be looking at modern tech (.net, java, etc...) plus requires add ins
Quick Test Pro http://www.mercury.com/ = Expensive but deals with modern tech if you but the extention and know VB needs add ins
OpenSource = OK for light stuff
Rational http://www.rational.com/ = Very confusing
SmarteScript http://www.accordsqa.com/ = easy to use, but doesnt require programming experience, new to market, no need for add ins
compuware http://www.compuware.com/ = have to hire them as consultants
just a few views. -

QTP & Load Runner
I use QTP and Load Runner. It may be high end but my company gives whatever tools I need to get the job done.

What a waste.
The article blows me away for all the wrong reasons. Regardless of the language chosen, it amazes me that the focus was on rewriting the application rather than performance testing and tuning the existing software.
They missed out on some amazing diagnostic tools to help them understand what was happening in the code, deployed system, and IT organization. What planet do these people live on? Being a fantastic developer may help but it does not make one a performance or systems engineer.
