Re:FAIL !
If you're price conscious, you're picking up something like this:
http://www.merimobiles.com/Cube_U30GT_1_6GHz_Dual_Core_10_1_inch_IPS_1280_800_p/meri4701.htmThat has the ports built in. For Office, you're running the free Kingsoft Office... Oh, and if you want more storage, plug in a microSD card for many GB more at much cheaper prices per GB.
All for $210. Surface is laughably bad for bang for buck, as is older refurb iPads
... the only killer app IMO in the new iPad is the awesome resolution. -
Re:Sticking with it
Have you looked at the Chinese tablets? There are many which have pretty much everything you want. I just got a Novo 7 Fire, which has a MicroSD slot, a 1280x800 IPS 5-point multitouch screen, bluetooth, etc. I am satisfied with the build quality. It is hard to compare build quality since it is somewhat subjective, but I would put it at slightly less than Apple products, but not much less. I flashed the firmware with a different rom which someone put together, and it is behaving exactly like a Nexus 7 now.
There are a multitude of different chinese tablets made by Ainol, Onda, Ramos, PiPo, etc. I found Merimobiles a good site to browse and shop for these chinese tablets, but I didn't buy from them so I can't say anything about their service and I don't recommend for or against them. -
Re:16:9 screens on a tablet
http://www.merimobiles.com/HAIPAD_I7_IPS_1024_600_Multitouch_Screen_with_Andr_p/meri4253.htm
Why spend even $199 when you can get a perfectly good tablet with an IPS screen for only $129? Spending $500 for an iPad 3 is crazy enough. Spending any more than $500 for a tablet is completely ridiculous.

Chinese Android TV box
For ~70$ you can buy a chinese box running Android with HDMI output, wi-fi and remote on sites like dealextreme, merimobiles, pandawill etc. Something like this
(it's just an example, there are literally hundreds of slightly different options):
http://www.merimobiles.com/GV_11A_VI6131_Android_2_3_TV_Box_1080P_1GHz_HDMI_p/meri3957.htmDon't expect it to work well out of the box, but as a DIY project it should be fine. You can write a custom android app to control it, or install something like plex for android.
For more possibilities, make sure you get a device with an available root access. -
Re:"Real work" ?
If you don't care about branding, you can get a reasonable tablet now for ~ $150
http://www.merimobiles.com/Ainol_NOVO_7_ELF_ICS_4_0_8GB_1GB_RAM_1_5GHz_CPU_p/meri0728.htmFor a LogMeIn Ignition tablet you might be OK with this one @ $85
http://www.merimobiles.com/MID_V8_Android_2_2_VIA_VM8650_800Mhz_8inch_800_600_p/meri0670.htmI'm not a shill, but I have a Dropad A8 that runs Android 2.3 and is usable for logmein to a Win7 PC or web browsing...

Re:Im in !!
The answer to your question is the Ainol (pronounced "eye-nol") Novo 7 Advanced, which can run Ice Cream Sandwich.
I'm not a shill for Merimobiles but they seem to have the cheapest price. I'll buy one as soon as they get back in stock. -
Re:Well
Why can't they be much cheaper?
While some here on
/. will refuse to admit, it actually is costly to make a tablet and get a decent margin on them. Most here would like a tablet to cost $150 and be able to run Crysis II while mixing 5.1 audio at the same time; there are limits to what tablets can do for a price. Some components like 10" screens are not plentiful as they have not been mass produced by many suppliers and are still limited to a few companies. If you look at the Shangzai market, you can find tablets with similar hardware specs being sold for at least $100 less. It's somewhat safe to assume that there is at least $100 profit on the hardware. For example $414 gets you this http://www.merimobiles.com/Venus_Pad_Honeycomb_android_3_0_Dual_Core_Tegra2_p/meri0641.htm.
