And
Exactly how would you do this? Everything will be done on computers in the future, taxes, job applications, schooling, you name it.
If we don't create alternatives now(and not in 10-25 years), the Trusted Computing Group will p3wn us.
For those keeping score there's only one key peice missing:
a law requiring the use of this DRM, or making illegal non DRM stuff, for the trusted computing group to win. -

Re:PVRs and advertising
Why can television/advertising companies prevent PVRs like TiVo from having features to skip advertising in their products when it is perfectly legal to store the data and fast forward or rewind?
The answer is that they can't. At least not in the analog signal that is broadcast over the air or cable that is your TV signal. However, they may make deals with digital providers not to provide a pure digital signal unless there is a way to block the skipping of commercials. Much like officially licensed DVD players won't skip the commercials and the FBI warnings if the disc creator instructs the player not too.
I've heard talk of restricting HDTV signals, because some consider it stealing.
Anyway, it will be interesting to see if commercials change their format on TV. Can you imagine pop-ups like on VH1's Pop-up-videos or banner ads like the current stock tickers?

dmca passed by both parties
The DMCA was passed 99-0 in the Senate, and a voice vote in the House (so yeas and nays were not recorded) (source) - that's a better reason to vote libertarian.

Re:Wrong
You have to pay soundexchange regardless. It's law. Soundexchange is supposed to distribute to the labels. Guess what the chances of your 3 band indie label getting some cash is? The way around it is to get written agreements with the labels to bypass it. I want to see every webcaster get agreements in writing from 2000 indie labels. Of course, the indie labels could start Indy Labels Association of America, but then they wouldn't be very indy.
Feel free to read the DMCA and the webcasting related settlements if you don't believe me. Here's a link with some people who run stations talking about this:

Re:marketingCorrelation is not equal to causation? Nice philosophy class mumbo jumbo. How about, "It's a fact that there are no facts." or "I can mathematically prove you don't exist." Now let's be serious for a minute.
Napster provided free promotion. When music is promoted, it sells, unless it sucks so bad even teens don't like it. That is basic and simple. Now, during the Kazaa era, sales are down directly proportional to production being down. Considering the economy, and the millions angry at the industry, sales should be down a lot more, but they aren't. The labels have created an artificial sales slump so they can cry piracy.
