Re:So there is a problem...
Actually, Hyundai, Kia and Mitsubishi all offer the 5/60 bumper/bumper and 10/100 powertrain warranties on all their new cars to this day. I dare say it hasn't translated to higher sales for Mitsubishi as effectively as it did for the Koreans.

Re:Exactly. 78k is luxury territory
Wake me up when an electric car is $20k new
$21.625 after the tax credit. So... wake up.
it's a motor, controller and a chassis, for crying out loud.
And a very expensive battery. The Nissan Leaf's battery costs http://green.autoblog.com/2010/05/15/nissan-leaf-profitable-by-year-three-battery-cost-closer-to-18/">$18,000 to produce. This is why you don't see really good electric cars at that low of a price point. Fortunately, we have people making electric sports cars and they will help drive the advances in battery technology, eventually leading to cheaper, better batteries and cheaper electric cars.

Re:battery technology
Just wondering, why does your 3D model's bodywork look like it was shaped with a sledgehammer?
Also, a few cars you might want to check out:

Re:Pretty Cool, Probably Won't Change Things Much
I agree - that's going to be the vehicle that revolutionizes transportation. I would trade my Accord in an instant for a $5,000-or-less electric commuter car with room for 1-2 people. 99% of my travel is going to work and back and the occasional errand.
Is $20,000 + close enough?

Re:Yeah, right
Would you expect a car manufacturer to offer a 10 year warranty on all of their cars?
Yes.

And for a short period of time, Chrysler had a lifetime warranty on their powertrains. If these companies can warranty a vehicle with an internal combustion engine and hundreds of moving parts for 10 years, Microsoft can suck it up and backport the patch.

Very knowledgable author :)
Wow, didn't see this one coming on Slashdot.
About a year ago I delt with David at length while he was working for WORKS, a tuning shop in San Francisco. We were discussing the details of the power, handling, etc. modifications that they would be making to my Mitsubishi Evolution (the car they in which they specialize). For the entire time I delt with David (before he left WORKS to pursue other things, like the book) I was consistantly impressed by his comprehensive knoweledge of both the technical and legal aspects of vehical modifications (especially impressive in good ole California thanks to strict emission standards).
His expertise and professionalism have resulted in him gaining much respect within the Evolution community, and although I have not yet had a chance to review his book, if it's anything like the conversations I've had with him, you'll be amazed by just how far car tuning has come.
Before talking with him, I didn't think it was safely possible to take a $32000 car, $7k of tuning, and end up just a hair short of a supercar*. Amazing.
Hope the book sells well.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution RS
The RS package is designed for sportscar purists that don't want heavy luxury crap in their cars. 150 lbs is dropped from the curbweight, the wing is removed, no carpet in the trunk, no stereo, no soundproofing, no AC, no power windows, no power locks, no rear wiper, no ABS, no HID headlights. The package also adds a rear strut brace and a front LSD.
I would buy one of these only if Mitsubishi would only get off their asses and bring the EVO to Canada... -
Mitsubishi Eclipse Concept-E
Personally, I'm interested in hybrids but not for fuel efficiency reasons. I'd like to see auto makers combine the output from different energy sources into all-wheel acceleration of a normal car.
Have you seen the new Mitsubishi Eclipse concept car? Its a similiar V6 FWD powertrain from the 2000+ models, but they're looking at strapping a hybrid(ish) electric motor to the rear wheels to boost both performance and fuel economy. Mitsbishi is claiming a total of 470 "horsepower" for the car: 270 from the V6 (which seems overrated, considering the current Eclipses V6 only puts out 210hp/205lb-ft), and ~200hp from the electric motor. Personally i'd like to hear some torque specs on the electric motor instead of horsepower, but I can't find em anywhere. Anyways, the car is a bit outlandish (check out the groovy see-thru roof), and according to the rumour mill it won't ever make it into production, but its a pretty damn interesting concept nonetheless.
Myself though, I just wish Mitsu would ditch that overweight pile of junk they call a Grand Am - oops, I mean, Eclipse - and get back to the 1G/2G roots: AWD + Turbo'd 4G63 domination. It'll never happen, but I guess in the same vein i'll never forgive Mitsubishi for disgracing the DSM family. *Sigh* -
Re:Microsoft hardware...
Mitsubishi is a consumer products maker with lines of computer monitors, high-end TVs, and cell phones among other things, as well as a well-known car maker.
Yes, all of these companies are related.
