Alternatives To Applets On The Client Side?
Choron asks: "Anybody will agree that Java Appplets are great for developing complex applications for the client side, with good (but not perfect) portability. Now apart from Tcl/Tk or esoteric technology such as embedded Inferno or developing a plugin (so much for the portability), are there other solutions for developing both portable and advanced GUI applications embedded in a browser?" Currently, I think Java applets are the only way to do client-side applets with any degree of portability, but who is to say that this will always be the case. What may the future hold for applets, and will Java be the sole driving force behind the technology? -
Gutenberg Bibles Online
Richey writes: "The British Library is making the Gutenberg Bible, the first major bible printed in the West available online. (Direct link to the book)." This isn't the first high-res copy of the Gutenberg Bible online; a German university library has already done it with their copy, but it's still cool. Update: 11/23 8:25 AM by michael : For the people that skipped those boring history classes, this was the first book printed in the western world with movable type, a huge leap in printing technology. -
Computers-for-Student-Eyeballs Scheme Goes Under
mwalker writes "The New York Times is reporting that ZapMe corporation is sending schools the bill for computers that they had given the schools for free. ZapMe's original business model of playing ads for students on the computers, and trading their personal information for "Zap points" towards prizes seems to have fallen afoul of a few privacy advocates." -
Tuning Linux for Databases?
Malcontent asks: "Since it's possible to tweak Linux to a high degree I wonder what tricks can be employed to make Linux a better database server. I am not talking about obvious hardware improvements like RAID, more processors or memory because they apply to any operating system. I am looking more for Linux specific things like kernel settings and disk/filesystem tricks which may improve performance." -
Surnames Genetically Correlated
Richey writes "The BBC has a story about a scientist who has discovered strong links between your genetic makeup and your surname. To quote from the site: 'This surprising discovery suggests that forensic evidence left at the scene of a crime could be read in a DNA laboratory and reveal the criminal's name.' That seems unlikely, but I'm still glad that my surname's Smith!" Doesn't work on women for some reason. -
Extrasolar Planet's Light Observed
Last week we ran a story about a visually-detected planet orbiting HD 209458 - its star dimmed when the planet passed before it. Today, Richey points us to a "a BBC story about how astronomers have actually picked up light reflecting off an extrasolar planet. They've managed to perform a basic analysis of its atmosphere from it." Check out the three elements they believe they found. -
The Competition for Developers
Ray Cromwell writes "Software competition a concern is a major concern, according to Steve Ballmer. Amongst other things, Steve says that the growing amount of development done for the Linux operating system by the work of volunteers developers worldwide is "scary." Ballmer also characterized the free-form Linux community as "somewhat crazy," but said Microsoft now has "a real server competitor." "
