Moderate this post up!!!
I would explain why the parent post should be moderated up (even further), but I've got (shameless plug) The MUGU Project to get back to...

Re:aaaahhhh zork...
Yes, definitely good to give credit to Zork. Back when I was into MUDs (weren't we all addicted at one point?), I would attempt to explain a MUD as "Zork, but with other people playing at the same time". Of course, the people I was explaining to didn't know about Zork either.
Now I try explaining the MUGU system as "a MUD, but with simple graphics".K45

Images and SoundsHow does the GPL affect non-sourcecode files that are part of an application?
Specifically, I'm concerned about the images and sounds that are included with a game I'm working on.
Does the GPL "contaminate" these other files that are included? If so, how do "source" and "binary" distribution apply to images and sounds.
Thanks,

Re:It's the only way
Actually, it's not the only way. Another solution is to give the client exactly the same information as the player's character should have. Similarly, the server must only allow the client to control actions that the character is able to perform. We're using this approach effectively in the MUGU Project (GPL code for both server and clients). I assume it wouldn't be practical to convert Quake to use this approach, but I offer it so anyone concidering a new Open Source game knows that other options exist. Note of course that the solution I offer requires extra computation on the server side, but I think the benefits are worth it. Kas (sorry, I don't have a

The MUGU Project
The MUGU Project doesn't have any fancy 3D graphics or highly optimized game engine. However, it has excellent potential for intricate worlds and in-depth roleplaying.
The author neglects to discuss the impact of adventure and roleplaying games. People may *buy* a game because of flashy graphics, but they will only continue to *play* if the game is fun. The OSS model may not be the best for cutting-edge tech, but it can certainly produce some addictive fun. :)
In the MUGU Project, we are keeping the game engine seperate from the game world and graphics. This allows world design, such as Alira to be developed independently.
As with any Open Source project, we're looking for more tents in the bazaar. Check out The MUGU Project if you're interested in working on an addictive massively-multiplayer game. -
