Re:utf-32/ucs-4
Please, don't use the Wikia NetHack Wiki. It is outdated, ad-ridden, and has been abandoned by the community, but Wikia doesn't allow a wiki to be deleted.
The current NetHack wiki is at http://nethackwiki.com/

Re:not hating but ive never heard of it
Especially the -8 is rather pointless.
It ensures the alt key commands work, on some Linux distros, they won't unless you add the -8.
Reverse video also is a stupid suggestion as you can't know what the normal video mode is, for others.
While that is true, in the nethack community reverse video means white on black.
Actually, corridors look "right and proper" with the normal typeface, since that is nethack, this suggestion is also crap.
I'd rather have the corridors not look like this:
##########
But this:
http://nethackwiki.com/mediawi...
or this:
http://www.coredumpcentral.org...
This, "#" is a sink, not a corridor.

Re:Should have made a backup
case WAN_WISHING:
#ifdef WIZARD
if (!wizard) {
#endif
otmp->spe = (rn2(10) ? -1 : 0);
break;
#ifdef WIZARD
} /* fall through, if wizard */
#endif[...]
/* set otmp->recharged */
if (oclass == WAND_CLASS) { /* prevent wishing abuse */
if (otmp->otyp == WAN_WISHING
#ifdef WIZARD
&& !wizard
#endif
) rechrg = 1;
otmp->recharged = (unsigned)rechrg;
}At least you have a 10% chance to retain your wish.

Re:Game developers aren't shooting for 100% realis
Not everyone (and dare I say most people) don't want to play a game where you get grazed in the leg with a bullet and your movement becomes entirely awkward, your character develops some sort of infection and then his leg needs to be amputated in the middle of the jungle with charlies everywhere, then being required to finish the rest of the game with one leg. (surely one person will reply to this begging for that)
And for those who do, there already is nethack and DwarfFortress.
This nethack game is easy: all the stairs are right next to the entrance. I've been playing this game for a few minutes and I'm already way down in here. Hey, what's a floating eye?
What do you mean, everyone in the Fortress committed suicide because one child's pet cat fell down a hole? Well... the cat broke its leg, the leg got infected, the pet cat died, the girl had a tantrum and stopped drinking so died. Then so did her parents. Then all their friends. Except the ones who went berserk from seeing the girl's ghost and started punching other people. Yeah, they may have all been a little on edge...

Re:Oh boyIt was me who calculated the optimal number of moves to win, at 2016. (I'm not completely convinced that the calculation is correct, though.) The current human records are 2135 with bones-stuffing (i.e. deliberately suiciding an advanced character to drop a whole load of valuable items into the game where another character can pick them up), and 2596 without any bones abuse, both by Maud. (For those wondering, the realtime record holder is Sayo (an alternate account of Adeon), with 1 hour 16 minutes.) It's obviously impossible to beat 2000 turns as that's the earliest you can enter the Quest. (For more information, see http://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Speed_ascension.)
I'd say that speed-ascension is far from solved. Maud can only get runs that fast when he gets incredible amounts of luck (only around 1% of games are lucky enough for him to even bother trying to speedrun them, he generally quits the other 99%), for instance; and different ways to do things are being discovered all the time. The polyself-based strategy all speed ascenders use nowadays is only a couple of years old, and very different from the way a normal game plays.

Re:"Fucking hard", RPG?
Nethack
hard
No. It's actually not that hard. Most games tell you to attack everything headfirst. 2 important tips:
1. Don't ever melee more than 1 enemy unless you are 100% certain you can take them all. Narrow corridors and wands are your friend.
2. http://nethackwiki.com/ specifically http://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Identification learn to do thisYou can practice in explorer mode by typing capital X. Get to the point where you don't die much at all.
