Ubuntu Turns 10
Scott James Remnant, now Technical Lead on ChromeOS, was a Debian developer before that. That's how he became involved from the beginning (becoming Developer Manager, and then serving on the Technical Board) on the little derivative distribution that Mark Shuttleworth decided to make of Debian Unstable, and for which the name Ubuntu was eventually chosen. On this date in 2004, Ubuntu 4.10 -- aka Warty Warthog, or just Warty -- was released, and Remnant has shared a detailed, nostalgic look back at the early days of the project that has (whatever else you think of it ) become one of the most influential in the world of open source and Free software. I was excited that Canonical sent out disks that I could pass around to friends and family that looked acceptably polished to them in a way that Sharpie-marked Knoppix CD-ROMs didn't, and that the polish extended to the installer, the desktop, and the included constellation of software, too. -
Monthly Ubuntu Releases Proposed
An anonymous reader writes "Scott James Remnant, the former Ubuntu Developer Manager at Canonical and current Ubuntu Technical Board leader, has proposed a new monthly release process for Ubuntu Linux. He acknowledges that with the six month releases there are features that end up landing way too soon, leaving them in a sour state for users. With his monthly proposal, Remnant hopes to relieve this by handling alpha, beta, and normal releases concurrently. It's unknown whether Canonical will accept the policy at this time." -
Btrfs Could Be the Default File System In Ubuntu Meerkat
An anonymous reader writes "The EXT family of file systems (ext2, ext3, ext4) have ruled many Linux distributions for a long time, and Ubuntu has been no exception. But things may no longer be the same for Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. Canonical's Scott James Remnant said in a blog post that plans are on for doing work to have btrfs as an installation option, and that the possibility of making it the default file system in Ubuntu 10.10 has not been ruled out." -
Segfault.org Coming Soon
We sure need to laugh a bit these days, and Scott James Remnant has announced that Segfault.org will be opening its doors on monday. They've got a strange little intro page until then that many of you will find quite amusing. I've seen what's behind the curtains and I think everyone will enjoy it immensely. -
Stupid Perl Tricks
Allright let it never be said that I can't take a joke: Scott James Remnant sent us a link to his Nerd News Generator. Basically, its another generator, but this one (ahem) generates moderately humorous slashdot-esque news articles. It needs some refining (I've actually been toying with creating a parody of Slashdot called Dotslash, and writing fake news purely for fun, but generating them automatically is pretty cool too) -

Linux Humor Site
Scott James Remnant wrote in with a comment about BeDope, and how cool it is. So cool in fact that he wants to work on a Hinux focused humor site. If you are interested in helping in joining in on this project (Hey, I'll write a Slashdot Parody!) you should send `subscribe' to `lindope-request@lantonet.com' (Scott also notes that this is just a working title- a real one will be determined later). The idea isn't to duplicate BeDope (which is already a hilarious site) but to have a centralized place for Linux related humor. I'm all for that.
