Re:A money grab
There is a
.us TLD. No company wants to use it though, because it has no brand recognition at all. When people want to find a company, they type companyname.com - not companyname.us.
Here is proof, in the form of a registry desperatly trying and failing to get people to buy .us domains: http://www.neustar.us/ -
Re:No international linksThere's no prerequisite for one to reside, or operate one's business from the United States in order to have a
.us address
Ummm, no. From nustar's FAQ,
Who can register a .US domain name?
Any U.S. citizen or resident, as well as any business or organization, including federal, state, and local government with a bona fide presence in the United States can register a .US domain name.
One of the following eligibility requirements must be met:- A natural person (i) who is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States of America or any of its possessions or territories or (ii) whose primary place of domicile is in the United States of America or any of its possessions, or
- Any entity or organization that is incorporated within one of the fifty (50) U.S. states, the District of Columbia, or any of the United States possessions or territories or (ii) organized or otherwise constituted under the laws of a state of the United States of America, the District of Columbia, or any of its possessions or territories, or
- An entity or organization (including federal, state, or local government of the United States, or a political subdivision thereof) that has a bona fide presence in the United States. See Section B.3.1 of the NeuStar proposal to the Department of Commerce for details concerning what constitutes a "bona fide presence."
.us domain, and I assume that would apply to .kids.us as well. -
Like this
Apparently, you want to watch this space.
That was linked from nic.us.. it's the page for the kids.us domain. Apparently Neustar is still holding a public comment period asking for advice on how to run the thing.. apparently they didn't really want to create this domain and don't have any idea how to go about doing the thing, so they seem to be hoping on letting "the community" come up with ideas.
The public comment period isn't over yet, though, so it *looks* like you can't get one yet.. on the other hand, as an interested party (i.e. an individual with a kids-specific site) this would probably be a great opportunity for you to make your voice heard.. -
Not free.
Registration of SLD under the TLD
.us is not free.
The fees charged are registrar are $5.50 per name per year, more for the first year. This is explained in schedule f)
This is about the same amount that Network Solutions charges ($6.00 a year) so you can expect to pay approximately the same amount for a SLD under .us as you do currently for one under .com.
P.S. Network Solutions took in over $600,000,000 last year, about 1/5 of which was from external registrars, the rest being from their own registration service.
