New Yorker Accidentally Gets $1M WebTV Prototype
An anonymous reader sent us to a story that chats about a shipping error causing a million dollar WebTV prototype to get shipped to a NY Bank employee. The creepy part is that the NYPD apparently tracked the package down. I guess I should be thankful the HPD isn't knocking on my door asking about that crate of Transmeta CPUs that somehow got shipped here by mistake last week. -
Crypto Advocate Under Investigation by FBI
Seth Scali writes "Cryptography advocate and former member of the IETF staff William Simpson is under investigation by the FBI for treason. Apparently, he is accused of 'challenging authorities and laws that may impinge upon his activities'. " As you would imagine, the case involves cryptography and the DOJ/FBI has some other strong feelings about crypto folks. -
NT4 awarded E3/F-C2 security classification
An anonymous reader wrote in to say "Microsoft has announced that NT was awarded this security classification, equivalent to the US C2 security classification, under the ITSEC, the UK's IT Security Evalutaion Criteria. As with the NT 3.5 C2 rating, this doesn't include being connected to a network. This is interesting, given that any local user on NT 3.5 or above server or workstation can become a member of the administrators group, which is not a Good Thing for a secure system... "
