Where Should all the 4th Gens Go?
ARSDeveloperGuy writes "Fourth generation languages are cool, but there seems to be little to no effort being spent to standardize them. The current state is commercialized pseudo-languages are created to allow vertical apps to be expanded. (ARS Remedy, Siebel, Oracle JDeveloper) The concepts of a form, field, and workflow can be standardized, and when you look at many of these languages they aren't terribly different. Why don't we create a standard and start writing "workflow converters" for these powerful languages? That would allow conversions to happen more readily, maybe even to an open source offering like OpenSourceCRM." -
C-JDBC 1.0 Released
StupidEngineer writes "The C-JDBC is a middleware RAID system for databases written in Java. The 1.0 release is finally ready for download after years of the team's hard work. The system definitely has come a long way and is probably a very viable solution for those of us that can't afford large DB clustering solutions, yet still want good scalability and redundancy." -

Third ObjectWeb Conference

Open Source Database Clusters?
grugruto asks: "A lot of open source solutions are available to scale web sites with clusters but what about databases? I can't afford an Oracle RAC license but can I have something more reliable and fault tolerant than my single Postgres box? I have seen this recent article that looks promising for open source solutions. Do anyone have experiences with clusters of MySQL , Postgres-R, C-JDBC or other solutions? How does it compare to commercial products?" -

ObjectWeb, an Apache-like group, has announced the availability of Clustered JDBC (or C-JDBC). C-JDBC is an open-source software that implements a new concept called RAIDb (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Databases). It is simple: take a bunch of MySQL or PostgreSQL boxes, choose your RAIDb level (partitioning, replication, ...) and you obtain a scalable and fault tolerant database cluster." -
