Any Fanless/diskless/ventless system with nx-bit?What I really want is a fanless/diskless/ventless system that has a CPU that supports the nx-bit. I think such a computer should last a very long time without any trouble. I think any server of any type on the Internet should have the nx-bit support. But finding this in a diskless/fanless/ventless computer has not been easy for me. I am not able to drop into Fry's etc though. Does anyone know of such a system?
I was told there was going to be a version of the PIC that would be willing to boot Linux. This would be perfect. But after 1.5 years of waiting, I don't want to wait any longer.

Re:Perhaps a SBC?
[...]you might be better off with an embedded linux SBC [...]
I would be happy with any fanless/diskless computer without vents. I have had about a dozen computers for about a dozen years and my failures have been due to disks breaking, fans breaking, and bugs getting into the computer and pooping (I live on a tropical island). The PIC would be great if I could boot Linux from a USB port. Now, that said, why are you trying to keep your server up and running for a long time? Presumably, the client machiens are also down during these outages?
The clients are all over the Internet. With independent failure modes, I do not presume they are also down. :-) -
Pics of the PIC
Actually people have been reporting drive failures when thier PIC falls off a table while running.
As this guy explains, the PIC is not very durable, nor is it very hackable. -
Re:Reason why you can't fiddle with it
that web page talking about trusted security which doesn't mention this computer AT ALL
THAT page doesn't mention the AMD's Geode GX PIC, but the linked story ends with a link to THIS page certainly does. And it says:
Specialized BIOS/firmware requirements and functionality AMD's Personal Internet Communicator required some very specific features within a small footprint. The specialized features and the results delivered by the General Software development team are listed below. ...
Custom feature requirements and reliable operation were implemented using Firmbase® Technology v1.3. * Boot Security (Cryptographic handshake between firmware and OS/Application) assures the service provider of system integrity Links to bootsec landing page
Note that the Boot Security link is the exact same link I gave you before.
So yes, your original post was wrong about the problem being an idiot bootloader (meaning a simplistic bootloader). The device in the story does have an idiot bootloader, but it is a more sophisticated Trusted Computing-idiocy that goes to a lot of advanced effort to LOCK OUT any non-approved BIOS, non-approved operating system, or non-approved applications.
I was in his office (where I used to work at the next door down the hall) at AMD's facility just three weeks ago fiddling with WinCE on an old prototype of exactly the computer in question.
It's quite possible the the old prototype had an idiot bootloader and no Trusted Computing anti-tamper system in place.

Re:Vaporware?
I was largely skeptical of the Sealand datahaven until I read that Ryan Lackey was the CTO.
This fella is one of the Financial Cryptography folks in Anguilla, along with Vince Cate. Some of the folks who sponsor the FC symposia include Zero Knowledge, E-Gold, and Hushmail.
I don't know about you guys, but when one of that trust-web is involved in something to do with liberty/cypherpunk/finance, I lend it more credence.

Links for practical sites for free speech.
You can get what you need here:
Freenet is a peer-to-peer, gnutella-with-strong-crypto-like server system. It's works but is still in very early stages of development.
You can also check out Vince Cate's Datahaven Services which is located in Anguilla, and will provide restriction-free (except for porn) boxes for a very reasonable price. Have fun, and don't get caught.
