Yes, I donate. Yes, I still have some hope for the world. YMMV.

Re:Finally...
It always seemed a major problem that companies must be devoted to profit... and that leads to issues
I remember a press release somewhere about a non-profit pharmaceutical company created specially because of the issues you refer to. Ah here it is... http://www.oneworldhealth.org/
Anyways, some type of issues that the world deals with doesn't fit well with the corporate business model. Just because a profit cannot be made, doesn't mean it shouldn't be done. -
OneWold Health - a Non-Profit Pharmaceutica Compan
Or, you could donate to and help create more institutes such as OneWorld Health Then the cures that tax funded research creates, would have a non-profit outlet for development.

Well there are non profit Pharmaceutical Companies
In July of 2000, Dr. Hale founded the Institute for OneWorld Health, the first nonprofit pharmaceutical company in the United States. Its mission was to develop safe, effective, and affordable new medicines for those most in need.
Drawing upon gifted scientific minds and the innovative business model they had created, Dr. Hale and her colleagues set out to develop the pipeline of potential drug leads into approved new medicines at a fraction of the cost of conventional pharmaceutical development. To ensure success, the team stressed partnership and collaboration with industry and international research institutions. To ensure affordability, they sought donated and royalty-free licensing of intellectual property and identified research and manufacturing capacity in the developing world.

A perfect match I'd say - These guys could produce and market a cure for cancer they can make a little money on it here in our part of the world, while using the profits let's say a couple of percent, on making drugs for other diseases available in the developing world... and hey whadyaknow - They also have cancer in developing countries!!! -
Or let these folks take it up!

Re:Raised eyebrows
I still get the sense that you're not hearing the part about the patent system being a bad thing. Asking who is using the patent system to save lives is like asking who is using the sedition laws in Australia to protect free speech. They're not only not designed for that purpose, they're designed for a specifically contradictory purpose.
If on the other hand you were shooting for a non-profit that's developing life saving medicines... the first one that springs to mind is the Institute for OneWorld Health. I'm sure it's far from the only one, but it's the biggest one I'm presently aware of. -
