Ekiga 2.0 Released
Some Anonymous Coward writes "After about one year of development the former GnomeMeeting team has released Ekiga. Ekiga is the successor of the popular GnomeMeeting. Ekiga calls itself the very "first Open Source application to support both H.323 and SIP". Ekiga is based on the h323/sip codebase, provided by the openh323 project. Also introduced with this release is ekiga.net, a platform to provide the community with free sip addresses." -
Design a Virtual Office with Open Source?
apropos asks: "An interesting question came up recently when discussing (yet again) starting an open-source based consulting company: 'How would you design the ultimate virtual office with open source software?' With things like fax, VoIP, web, email, security and office suites all available as open source products, what kind of useful things could be done? One idea that came to mind was emailing answering machine recordings. What would you put into your ultimate virtual office solution?" -
Speex Joins Xiph To Bring Free VOIP To The Masses
xercist writes "Xiph.org has added a new project to their plate of goodies- Speex. Speex is an audio codec specifically for, you guessed it, voice. It has integration with Xiph's OGG container, but is mainly being used right now for VOIP. There is currently an XMMS plugin available, and is also supported by LinPhone, OpenH323, and GnomeMeeting. Asterisk PBX is working on adding support. This is not a new project -- Jean-Marc Valin has been hard at work writing the codec for quite a while now. However, Jean-Marc is now a full-fledged member or the Xiph.org team, and in celebration, Speex beta one is being released. Xiph.org has brought you (or is currently working on bringing you) Vorbis, Tremor, Theora, Tarkin, Icecast2, cdparanoia, now Speex, and, of course, the Moaning Goat Meter. This is a LOT to do, so please donate to show your support." -
Free Web Meeting Environments?
doval asks: "I just took a look at Webex and Centranow. For those of you who have seen these sites, is there an open source equivalent? For those of you who have not, they offer the following (currently wintel only): Presentation Sharing, Document Sharing, Application Sharing, Web Co-browsing, File Transfer, Desktop Sharing, Telephony Integration, Internet Voice, and Video Integration. Think MS Meeting, ICQ, PC-to-phone, and PC-to-PC all in a browser (synchronous). I am familiar with open source bits and pieces like OpenH323, Jabber, plus collaboration environments like Zope. However, I do not know of anything like the sites I mentioned. Particularly, I would like to get my hands on a good example of Web synchronous application sharing and PC-to-phone."
