A C++ Library That Brings Legacy Fortran Codes To Supercomputers
gentryx writes "In scientific computing a huge pile of code is still written in Fortran. One reason for this is that codes often evolve over the course of decades and rewriting them from scratch is both risky and costly. While OpenMP and OpenACC are readily available for Fortran, only few tools support authors in porting their codes to MPI clusters, let alone supercomputers. A recent blog post details how LibGeoDecomp (Library for Geometric Decompostition codes), albeit written in C++, can be used to port such codes to state-of-the-art HPC systems. Source code modification is required, but mostly limited to restructuring into a new pattern of subroutines." -
Intel Releases Threading Library Under GPL 2
littlefoo writes "Intel Software Dispatch have announced the availability of the Threading Building Blocks (TBB) template library under the GPL v2 with the run-time exception — so this previously commercial only package is now open for all the use, whether for open-source projects or commercial offerings (although they are explicitly encouraging open source use). The interface is more task-based then thread-based, but with a somewhat different view of things than, e.g. OpenMP. From the Intel release: 'Intel® Threading Building Blocks (TBB) offers a rich and complete approach to expressing parallelism in a C++ program. It is a library that helps you leverage multi-core processor performance without having to be a threading expert. Threading Building Blocks is not just a threads-replacement library. It represents a higher-level, task-based parallelism that abstracts platform details and threading mechanism for performance and scalability.'" -
True Visual Programming
eberta writes "We are still stuck with text programming for the most part. I can think of only a few truly visual programming environments like LabView and none are really mainstream for application development. Being recently unemployed and having ample spare time, I have started a pet project to work on my own version, GIPSpin (Graphical Interface Programming System). With multithreading becoming an increasing issue in software development, I'm wondering why hasn't there been more focus on visual programming. I see so much possibility of making coding easier and handling threading issues semi-automatically by allowing the user to graphically guide the auto-threading AI. Right now it seems the industry is focused on figuring out how to get just small chunks of code auto-threaded either through hardware or compiler technology, with longer term solutions like OpenMP still text based environments." -
Intel Announces Free Linux Compilers
gobbles writes: "Intel has just announced free (as in beer) C/C++ and FORTRAN compilers for Linux. With support for OpenMP and Pentium 3, 4 and Itanium optimizations, this is a winner - suddenly Intel hardware becomes a whole lot more attractive for Linux developers. For those with Pentium 4 or Itanium systems, performance gains of 50% or more are just waiting to be had! Grab the compilers here and take 'em for a spin! Athlon owners need not apply."
