Military Enlists Open Source Community
jmwci1 writes "The US Defense Department is enlisting an open source approach to software development — an about-face for such a historically top-down organization. In recent weeks, the military has launched a collaborative platform called Forge.mil for its developers to share software, systems components and network services. The agency also signed an agreement with the Open Source Software Institute to allow 50 internally developed workforce management applications to be licensed to other government agencies, universities and companies." -
OpenSSL Receives FIPS 140-2 Validation
Argon writes "Close on heals of NewsForge reporting about Government Agency dragging its heels on OpenSSL validation comes the news that OpenSSL receives FIPS Certification. More details are available at the Open Source Institute site which has been driving the effort to get OpenSSL certified. FIPS 140-2 certification allows software using the certified version of OpenSSL to get into various Government departments previously not possible, thus increasing penetration of Free Software in Government." -

Barry Duplantis of Red Hat will be serving as the Program Manager for this CRADA which will cover the Navy's use of OSS within the Naval Oceanographic Office's Web services, scientific computing and enterprise architecture systems." -

NIST Validation Of OpenSSL Algorithms
An anonymous reader submits "On Monday, May 10, 2004, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) posted a notice that the AES, DES, 3DES, DSA and SHA-1 algorithms for OpenSSL have been validated. The validation notices can be found at the following NIST sites: Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) Algorithm (Certification # 146); Data Encryption Standard (DES) Validated Implementations (Cert # 258); Triple Data Encryption Algorithm (TDEA, a.k.a. "Triple DES"): (Cert # 256); Digital Signature Algorithm (DSA) Validation System: (Cert # 108); Secure Hash Algorithm (SHS) Validation System: (Cert # 235). Successful validation of these algorithms does NOT mean that OpenSSL has received FIPS 140-2 validation, yet. The overall FIPS 140-2 validation effort for OpenSSL is still in process. Additional updates will be posted on the OSSI web site, www.oss-institute.org. NIST validation of these algorithms does, however, signify a major milestone in OSSI's efforts to secure the FIPS 140-2 validation for OpenSSL.
