How Do I Make Sense of Microsoft Access?
Anthony Boyd asks: "I have a pretty good tool-set for LAMP work, but as I get into Microsoft jobs, I've started to wonder if I'm working with the best tools. In particular, I'm exploring an 'out of control' Microsoft Access setup, which has about 200 tables in 30 .mdb files, including some duplicated/outdated tables. I'd like to print the properties of each table (with the comments for each field), print the table list for each database, get info on the field types & relationships, and so forth. What tools do you suggest for trying to grok a large Access mess?" -
Baldur's Gate Mod Lets You Play Original On Sequel
Anthony Boyd writes "The Baldur's Gate series has seen a lot of official expansions and unofficial mods. The latest one is fairly impressive: in about 750k, the BG1tutu team has delivered a file that completely moves your Baldur's Gate 1 games over to the Baldur's Gate 2 engine. According to the readme, it means you can play BG1 with screen sizes of 1024x768 or larger, you get more auto-pause options, and all spells and creatures have been converted to the updated BG2 rules. Best mod ever!" -
Dealing w/ Outside Interests in Your Projects?
Anthony Boyd asks: "Last weekend, I built a web site that is a poor-man's version of Classmates. Except that it is custom-built just for my high-school, with no ads or fees. I got a fine response from the people that knew about it, and was busy reconnecting with lost friends... until [last week], when my school's alumni association called and gave me an earful of comments such as, 'that's a rogue site' and 'it may not be legal!' Turns out, they hoped to build something similar, as a platform to entice donations. So, I'm stuck. Before I do anything, I'd like to ask Slashdot: have the projects you built for 'just for fun' been overrun by outside interests? If so, what did you do, and what would you have done differently?" -
Where Do Open Source Developers Hide Their Resumes?
Anthony Boyd asks: "I am a Web Manager in Silicon Valley, looking to hire full-time developers who know SQL, PHP, and Apache. With bonus points for knowing XHTML and Solaris. I am having a miserable time of it. It seems that supporting the Open Source community means limiting yourself to an incredibly small talent pool, or supporting people who are in such high demand that they are constantly off the market. What I am wondering is what /. readers do when they are looking for a new job. Do you just read the classifieds? Do you post your resume? Where? Are there forums you use? Tell me where to go to find you guys, because I would like to throw money and jobs your way."
