A Wikipedia Conspiracy and the Wall Street Meltdown
PatrickByrne writes "This is The Register's world-class investigative piece concerning one aspect of the meltdown on Wall Street ('naked short selling') and how the criminals engaged a journalist to distort Wikipedia to confuse the discourse. The article explicitly and formally accuses a well-known US financial journalist, Gary Weiss, of lying about his efforts to distort a Wikipedia page under assumed names, and accuses the Powers That Be in Wikipedia (right up to and including Jimbo Wales) of complicity in protecting Weiss. This is not another story about a 15-year-old farm kid in Iowa pretending to be a professor. This is like the worst Chomskian view of Elites manipulating mass opinion. But it is all documented." We discussed the alleged Wikipedia manipulation when The Register first wrote about it last December. The submitter is the CEO of Overstock.com and a major player in this drama from the beginning. -
Buy.com Brags About SN+E-commerce Patents
RBAE writes "In an article in InternetRetailer.com, buy.com CEO Scott Blum brags about how they will protect and enforce their (pending) patents that link social networking and e-commerce, so that anyone trying to integrate these two fields will have first to pay them a handsome fee, or else. Mind that buy.com hasn't even started to offer such service, while other sites like Overstock and eGrupos have already launched services integrating ecommerce (online auctions) and social networking. A quote from buy.com's CEO: "We'll stand out with our patents on e-commerce and social networking, and we're big enough to protect them". Finally an interesting way to apply social networking, and Buy.com wants it all for themselves." -
Utah Sees First Spyware Case
denlin writes "According to a story at The Register: 'Overstock.com is set to become the first company to take action under Utah's new anti-spyware law. The company has filed a complaint against online retailer SmartBargains in the third district court in Salt Lake City. Utah's spyware law, the world's first, only made the statute book on 3 May. Utah is the only state with current spyware legislation, although California and Iowa are considering their own versions of the law.'"
