    Paintthemoon writes: "The European Space Agency is testing components for a system to recycle human waste in space. Saying that the ability to turn waste into food is crucial for long-haul missions (such as to Mars) or colonizing efforts, the ESA hopes that the entire system can be assemled and tested as a unit in 2005." The food is probably not a great reason to head to space, unfortunately.

Seems we're due for another round of volcanic activity which would be about a thousand times more powerful than Mt. Saint Helens.   4. Monitor's Engine Raised From Atlantic

    Paintthemoon writes: "Naval salvage experts raised the 30-ton steam engine from the Civil War ship Monitor from the bottom of the Atlantic on Monday. The ship had sunk in 1862 while being towed about 16 miles off of Cape Hatteras." The hull of the Monitor, it turns out, is unrecoverable because it's had depth charges and an anchor dropped on it (unrelated incidents), but there are plenty of other pieces still to be brought up and studied.

    Paintthemoon writes: "The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center released a paper Friday that may explain why matter won the battle with antimatter following the big bang. In studies of B mesons, they determined that there is a significant differential in decay rates between B mesons and anti-B mesons. Similar studies in the 60s of K mesons led to a Nobel Prize."

    Paintthemoon writes: "So, this crazed entrepreneur and Caltech buddies this weekend staged a successful test of using a 30-foot kite to raise a 6,900 pound concrete obelisk in the Mojave. The theory behind this is that the ancient Egyptians could have used such wind power to raise obelisks and build the pyramids ... " The article is from earlier this month. It's been a lot longer than that since scientists started trying to figure out how the Egyptians moved and righted some of their obelisks.
