Dashboard Linux
zebziggle writes "The dashPC has Global Positioning (GPS) and Navigation, DVDs, Games (Quake 3, SoF, UT), Address book database, etc. It can run any programs that will run on an Intel/AMD i686 class computer. There is a Basic Stamp micro-controller that interfaces the Linux box to the car ignition for controlled boot/shutdown." The article says Linux, but that screenshot tells a different story. The website has other stuff and a lot more pictures. -
Ideas For High School Electronics Class?
mithrandirFan asks: "I am about to teach an electronics class at the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, a school for academically gifted 11th and 12th grade high school students. There is no set curriculum for this class. In the past, the class has been taught with BASIC Stamps. By the end of the class, the student had built a fairly simple robot that could do things such as running away from light, following a wall, etc. I was wondering if the /. community had any other ideas that I could use in enhance the class. Keep in mind that there is no past electronic or programming experience required for the class, but also these are academically gifted students." -
Build Your Own Robot For About $89
usgrant writes: "The Robotics Club of Yahoo has grown to 500+ members over the last two years, and now they have created a little something of their own. A few months ago they released their own public robot kit called TRaCY. The kit goes for $89 and has the basic features: IR detection, BASIC Stamp II programmable chip, bump sensors, light sensors, servo motors ... The chip is programmable and is made by Parallax. Write the code on your comp, and upload to the robot through a serial port. The wizards at TRCY even added sample source code to have the 'bot wander the room. (Sorry, I don't think the software has been ported to Linux...) They also released the 'parts' list and a PDF manual for instructions. Lots of people contributing to this on their free time, and looks like some new developments are coming in the near future. "
