Mac PhoneHome
This kind of software has been around for awhile. Have a look at https://www.pcphonehome.com/ It also relies on the firmware password Michael

Brigadoon PhoneHome already doing this
Brigadoon has software for Macs and PCs, 30-day trial and $30 forever, to do essentially the same thing. See https://www.pcphonehome.com/

Phone Home instead.
I pay for this service and it works well. Everytime your computer connects to a network an email is sent to their server and to any server of your choice with as much tracking/networking information as possible.

Don't let the name confuse you, they *DO* have a Mac version, I run it on my powerbook.

Even better--PC Phone HomeGet pcphonehome (I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet). This will protect your laptop even if the thief plugs it into an off-campus network (quite likely) They also offer the product for macs. It won't stop a determined/savvy laptop thief but the odds of that are low. Oh, and keep a "guest" account without a password so thieves will be less inclined to immediately format everything. And keep all your important info encrypted and protected.
ps-be wary of the combination of credit cards, alcohol and women ; )

Re:So what lock to buy
Forget the lock, get this. You might not prevent theft, but you can nearly guarantee it will be plugged onto a network and be recovered.

Re:Mac address perhaps ?
There's a sign in my dorm's lobby for PC PhoneHome (MacPhoneHome), which is supposed to do what you describe.

Re:Drat! Foiled again!
For protecting the laptop, not the data, a friend uses PC Phone Home. Any other recommended security products to protect the physical laptop?

WTF is PC PhoneHome?
PCPhoneHome has a product which claims to email "position data" regularly from your laptop (Any machine running Windows, MacOS, Linux, or PalmOS, they claim).
Ignoring however they manage to provide this GPS in software, and how they manage to send email via a variety of possible transports (without being detectable at the OS level, they claim to run at a much lower level), they have one claim in particular that is mind-boggling:
They have a couple of versions, the freeware version does everything above, and the $30 version claims that it can't be removed from a hard disk with "fdisk, low-level format, or format".
I think they're pushing snake oil. If they actually do everything they claim to do, I'd love to find out how. Does anyone have any experience with them?
