Re:your web page
The "How to Negotiate a Job Offer" link on your page doesn't work.
Thanks for the heads up; I'll see about fixing it. In the meantime, you can reach the Geek Ed pages with the following links:

Re:Pittsburgh Sucks
I wasn't able to attend (prior commitments, do I didn't even register.) Still, a suggestion for the next meetup: the Foundry Ale Works in the Strip. That's where we've been hosting Geek Night for the past 4 years... decent food, good beer, and (IIRC) they still have a standing wireless network connection provided by a local ISP.
BTW, the next Geek Night gathering is this coming Thursday (August 1st), if you're just interested in meeting like-minded souls. We typically have 400-500 people show up over the course of the evening.

Are we the only ones that hang out and drink beer?
I'm surprised to see so many people say that they don't hang out and drink beer after work with fellow geeks.
Every Friday me and my friends drink beer at The Church. A couple of geeks are from my company, others from other geek institutions. Before the dot.com bust, a lot of single pretty nongeek girls would hang out there too. And every month or two, Pittsburgh Geeks throw a big beer bash among other events (check out the pictures from Geek Nights past).
I also have Saturday afternoon Dreamcast sessions (that turn into Sunday morning) with geeks from my previous job, but I find I am better friends with the guys I drink with, and the gaming is more just about the games.
I also disagree that depending on your job for your social life is a bad thing. When we're in school, we depend on school for our social lives. No different when you work. It's natural you meet and share things with the people you spend the most time around. -
Geek Night
Look in your community for some sort of geek-type gathering. Pittsburgh holds something monthly called Geek Night; It is wonderful for networking, as well as good ol beer drinking and conversation with fellow male and female geeks about geek topics and non geek topics. And if your community doesn't have any events like this, why not get together with people from technology companies around your city, and get one started?

Re:Ex-Pgh resident
The only thing that's technically cool about Pittsburgh are the Honda Civic (???) with the LYCOS paint scheme.
Actually, it was a Honda Prelude, though I removed the stickers when I left Lycos (odd to see your car referenced on
/. :-)with CMU there, one would believe that it would be healthy area for startups...I guess not.
You probably weren't looking in the right places... In the past six years in Pittsburgh, I've worked for four companies, three of them startups. Last year, I was looking for a new job, again with a startup... even with that limiting criteria, I had resumes out to over two dozen companies.
