Daffodil DB / One$DB - How Do They Compare?
capt.mellow asks: "It's been mentioned that Daffodil Software has just released php extensions for their java-based commercial and open-source databases, Daffodil DB and One$DB respectively, enabling these databases as options for running web applications. Personally, I have never heard of these databases before. How do they compare to the likes of Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Firebird, SQLite, et. al.? Has anyone used them in web applications, and would they care to relate their experiences?" -
Programming Books for Non-Programmers?
andy@petdance.com asks: "Any programmer who's used an online programming resource or community has had the frustration of answering programming questions for non-programmers. This is especially true with web-centric technologies like Perl and PHP. I've always wondered where to point these newest of the new, and O'Reilly's latest Ask Tim article addresses this. Unfortunately, Tim suggests picking up an ORA book on ActionScript, which seems a bit too specific. Are there any good introductions to the concepts of programming? And is any such book necessarily tied to a language?" -
PHPBuilder.com Builds No More
An unnamed reader writes: "From an email from the webmaster of PHPBuilder.com, Tim Perdue: 'Hello - I'm writing to let you all know that I am no longer with PHPBuilder.com, as internet.com has slashed the budget and the site is no longer actively maintained.' For the rest of the story, check out the article here: NewbieNetwork.net It's a pretty sad day when one of the biggest PHP sites is no long being supported, and essentially bails out. You have to wonder what is going on at Internet.com that they can't support PHPBuilder? Thankfully, there are still several good PHP sites out there for information and support, including Zend." -
Open Source Databases Revisited
pusakat writes "If you've been following performance comparisons of the different Open Source databases, Tim Perdue revisits PostgreSQL v. MySQL with production data from SourceForge and comes up with interesting results. This may be fodder for yet another 'my database is better than your database' exchange from both camps but the results are interesting anyway." -
MySQL And PostgreSQL Compared
unicron writes: "PHPBuilder has got an article MySQL and PostgreSQL Compared. " Everyone who has used these DBs knows the differences between them, and now that licensing isn't one of them, let's try to talk about where each excels and the other fails. I know people get almost as religious about their DBs as they do about OSs and programming languages, but let's try to get somewhere here and not just needlessly flame and rant, mmkay? -
