Stunning, Detailed New Image of Jupiter
darenw writes "From the Cassini spacecraft's flyby of Jupiter in late 2001, a new mosaic image has been assembled, revealing a stunning amount of detail, beautiful waves, swirls and spots in Jupiter's atmosphere. Get the story and images at the Cassini imaging team website." This is a huge image. My eyeball guess is that each pixel is the size of Pennsylvania. -
Using Bacterial DNA For Data Storage
NPV writes "January ACM Communications has an article on the use of DNA in genetically modified bacteria to store information. This is an attempt to achieve the ultimate in archival storage (one of the modified bacteria can tolerate 1000X more radiation than a human being). Now just suppose that the "junk DNA" in the human genome is the documentation package for the machine code. Who wrote that manual?" Here's the article abstract. -
Unicode, WWW, Databases and Japanese Web Sites?
Matthew Branton asks: "I have recently started working on a database driven Japanese language web site, and frankly I am getting lost in a sea of complicated Unicode madness. I was toying with the idea of using Python 2.1, PostgreSQL and the mxODBC interface, has anyone else had experience with this particular setup? Are there more appropriate free solutions available, perhaps JSP/Servlet based?" Unicode received a a lot of coverage this week, on Slashdot, and maybe that's due to the increasing worldwide popularity of the net and the desire to read and work in the character sets for users of a given nationality rather than trying to have it all fit in Latin-1. Do Python, PostgreSQL or mxODBC have any issues with Unicode? -
Comments On The DMCA Published
vectro writes, "Well, the copyright office has published all the comments they've received. It looks like all the comments are pro-consumer, with the exception of those from media companies: Time/Warner (movies), Sony Computer (interestingly, comments focus on Playstation rather than movies or music), and the MPAA." These are in .pdf format, so you'll need Acrobat Reader. -
Token Ring/Ethernet Hybrid Network?
Matthew Branton writes "I am currently a student and for the past year have been forced to use my school's antiquated token ring network. No More I say! I am interested in setting up an internal (to my room) ethernet network, which integrates with the school's token ring one. This desire stems primarily from the poor token ring support in Linux, and the lack thereof in Beos. Finally, I am looking to do so in the most cost effective manner possible (this is where Linux fits in), can anyone share their solutions? " I'm not very well versed in Token Ring networks, so I don't know right off how feasible something like this is. Can anyone shed some light on this subject?
