For those of you who want to build your own arcade cabs, just like the Sbox, you may want to check the Arcade@Home site at http://www.arcadeathome.com.
In addition to the MAME front-end of the same name, the site features a nice collection of pics and links to converted and custom-built cabinets. IIRC, the Plastic Cactus site linked from this page has a set of measured drawings that might be useful, and there are probably others too.

There's also the very nice Build Your Own Arcade Machine site: http://plaza.powersurfr.com/kevin/arcade/

Both of these sites are geared toward creating cabinets for use with emulation, but if that's not what you're after I'm sure they could be adapted for true arcade hardware. I've been thinking of building something like an Sbox myself, someday when I magically become competent with power tools. ;-)

Gather around, boys and girls, for a story how Dasunt was really dumb. This is a great story, btw, I want to kick myself in the arse every time I recall it.

About 5 years ago, one of my friends was at a police auction, and there were 10 upright arcade machines there, all in working order. They had been siezed, since they were modified to run illegal gambling. Since my friend has $10 on him at the time, he made the only bid, and got all the machines for the lowly price of $1/machine.

A year later he was moving out, and he offered to sell me the machines at $10/machine. I said no, since I didn't want to have a big hulking machine that only could play one game (I believe it was poker, blackjack, etc on the machines). The machines had great monitors and all the controls worked.

Then, about 2 years ago I got into console and arcade emulation heavily. I found out that a lowly K6-2 stuck in a machine with a special adapter/driver could run plenty of games and use the original monitor. *Sigh* I looked up prices on Ebay. Conservatively, since the machines did have a slot in the front to dispense money and thus weren't exactly mint, each machine could have been sold for $250.

D'oh, I am dumb.

My friend was happy, he bought them for the remote controlled relays in the machines that were used to "flip" the machine over to a non-gambling game whenever the cops came around. So, he got a ton of relays. I, in my naive state, got shafted. I believe he sold all his remaining machines (5) for $50.

Since I researched a bit on emulation and arcade cabinents in hopes of building a cocktail style machine, here's some useful links I found.

although it can be practiced like it. Remember, communism is supposed to be a classless system, and, well, Stalin didn't really practice that, now did he. Sorry if this looks ot, but it is a direct reaction to Katz's article.

So before you start grouping nazism, fascism, apartheid and communism all together, look at the philosophies surrounding each. Communists have no particular reason to get children to anonymously turn in social deviants, but then again, communism isn't often practiced around here.

Coincidentally, the Globe and Mail had a page 3 story today on why 80% of the world's population (or at least their leaders) really don't like capitalism, so it appears that their are two sides. (Can you guess the demographics of that 80%? If so, you win a free meal !

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Here in Edmonton, Alberta, my cable company, (Powersurfr), imposes a stiff quota on our cable modems. With the basic package ($40/month) you get 1 gig of upload and 10 gigs of download, if you go over they start charging you extra. ($40/gig of upload over and $10/gig for download). It's a big pain because you always have to watch the quota. 10gig download isn't so bad, but the upload one is especially hard to stay under, I know people that exceed it from just playing quake over the net on a regular basis. Before I got my cable modem the quota used to be 2 gigs of total data upload or download, I can't imagine that how frustrating that would be. You can of course, get the plus or pro package which allows you more quota (and ips, and domain hosting).

Having said that, the quotas are necessary to keep the service affordable and fast. Without quotas we'd all be uploading much more, slowing the network down and costing powersurfr more in data transfer forcing a price hike. Plus we get cooler hostnames than @home; there is a little web interface allowing you to pick an "IN A" for .powersurfr.com (ie.. cmdrtaco.powersurfr.com), which is much nicer than 24.65.13.23.ab.wave.home.com or cx170741-a.elcjn1.sdca.home.com.
Quotas suck, but if used not too stringently they can allow for the provision of an overall higher level or service.
