I'll tell you why.
There's numerous people that misuse HTML/javascript/css/... but there we rarely blame the formats...? What's so different about Flash?
Because it's a really well-implemented, close-sourced, not-free (as in cash) program/scripting language that's the best in the industry. That's a very bitter pill for a lot of people around here to swallow. Unfortunately, it's true. There's just so much functionality, speed, and extensability in Flash that unless Macromedia seriously drops the ball, no one is going to catch up. I wish everyone who used Flash had the skills of Praystation and the like; unfortunately like any tool, it takes practice and skill to master, and in the wrong hands can be seriously misused.
If you're just a OSS zealot, I can understand disliking Flash. But bashing its feature-set is just childish, particularly since there's nothing else out there that can do half of what it does. -
Flash Line Count
Have you ever coded in Flash? Actionscript (or whatever thay call it now) is one of the most high level languages on the plane. Go check out praystation. The guy does some pretty amazing stuff in tens of lines of code.
Try programming something in Java that is easy to do in flash. You'll end up with roughly the number of lines in the flash program cubed. That's not to say that verbosity is an indicator of difficulty, it's just the way the languages are designed. Flash is made to do a lot with a little, using vector images and high level scripting.

Re:What's Mozilla got over IE/OE?
Surfstation works fine in Moz 1.0RC1 and Konqueror 3.0 in fact, every site I'm trying seems to be working fine, granted I am trying all the major ones... Praystation works fine, designiskinky works fine
/me tries some of the old Dreamless crew's sites... Limmy has a few bugs... Milt's site seems to work fine tho. Wish I could remember some sites with heavy DHTML... -

Multimedia pre and post WWW
Pre-WWW:
Multimedia existed from early on this century: from the 1920s: look up the Futurists: George Antheil's Ballet Mechanique was one of the first orchestral pieces paired with mechanical sounds: it included bells, sirens, airplane propellors...
From the 1970s on: Nam Jun Paik is a good example, one of the first artists to get their hands on video cameras. His, and others' video art, are available to rent from Electronic Arts Intermix.
If you live in NYC you can just drop by and watch whatever you want. Post-WWW:
(and don't dis it because these sites use flash, okay? Some of the most adventurous webart out there uses flash...)
Superbad, Praystation, Modify Me, and Y0UNG-HAE CHANG are interesting and completely different new media works. Check out the anti-banner ads at Soul Bath.
And finally, a site that links to a whole lotta pages, with some adventurous, forward-looking design. (some good, some bad) rb -
Re:eToys death watch?
If you know of any online artist groups, inform them about the eToy vs eToys issue. The artist community does not suffer this crap very easily.
I can tell you, the backing behind online artist groups is very large. We may not have a site like /. but there are a lot of sites involved, and just about everyone has subscriptions lists that spread news quite quickly. I would say the online art movement against eToys is almost as large as the Slashdot movement, even if it isn't "in your face". Here's some online art sites w/ relevent info for those in that community:
