Already great Free drivers available for Savage
Thanks to the hard work of Tim Roberts (and lately Alex Deucher) among others who have made it possible to run these cards for many years now. Check out the main site for Free Savage drivers

Re:Let's talk about something other than the licen
Am I missing something that you noticed?
Well, a lot of us have been waiting for that new VIA chipset driver. It's for an integrated video chip which is in a lot of those mini-PCs and also some desktops and laptops. Unfortunately, only a minimal version of the code for XFree86 4.3 exists (basic accelerated 2D, but lacking everything else -- see here). -
Savage driver with DRI, OpenGL, XvMC
In a related note, S3 graphics has released open source drivers for the S3 Savage graphics family. See eg. here.

There is XFree86 support for the ProSavage DDR...
although not in the main XFree86 4.2.0 release.
Note that, according to the author of the Savage driver, he has no ProSavage DDR hardware to test on, so don't bet on it, but hopefully it should work (as with most drivers, it's just a matter of adding a hardware ID to make it work, assuming the hardware vendor hasn't messed around too much since the previous version, which is unlikely in this case)...
Hope this helps some people...

Re:IBM T-seriesUpdate:
I said that I expected my video problems to go away soon, well, they have. Tim Roberts released an updated driver for the Savage/IX video card, available for download from his S3 Savage for XFree86 4.[12] page. With the new driver, text mode no longer gets trashed and DGA2 works fully.
Thanks Tim!

Re:IBM T-series
To solve your StarOffice problem, put export SAL_DO_NOT_USE_INVERT50="true" in your
.bashrc (or equivalent file). This is also mentioned on the website of the author who writes the Savage driver for XFree86. -
Re:Awww Jeah
Don't sweat this. I went through Slack 7.1, Caldera 2.4, RedHat 7.0 (Patched), Turbo, and eventually back to Slack. I ended up rebuilding the full XFree 3.3.6 and patched the savage on an IBM T20 with the chipset and it runs beautifully at 1024 X 768 on this quick little laptop. The patches are here, along with instructions, here. I built mine without xfs (the font server). Tim's XF86_SVGA binary needs the font-server by default, but, this can be suppressed with startx -fp
/usr/X11R6/lib/fonts/misc/.
I only wish they'd had this done 2 weeks ago. Would have helped my presentation today for VMWare with a dual-boot Slack/Win2k workstation much more effective. >:)
