Feds Open 'Total' Tech Spy System
Diesel Dave writes "A Wired article reports: 'On Wednesday, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) will begin awarding contracts for the design and implementation of a Total Information Awareness (TIA) system...The Total Information Awareness program, with its ability to provide persistent storage of everything from credit card, to employment, to medical, to ISP records, is a recipe for civil liberties disaster unless there are provisions for citizens to find out who is looking at their records and to see and correct those records.' The foundation for the omnipotent National ID database has now been laid." -
Dmitry Sklyarov Gains High-Profile Defense Lawyer
Diesel Dave writes: "There's an article on Law.com about Dmitry Sklyarov's new Lawyer. Renowned San Francisco defense attorney John Keker has agreed to represent the Russian programmer pro bono. Keker is quoted as saying: "I think he is being unjustly accused and that's the kind of case I like to do." and "[The Government is] always welcome to dismiss the case, but we didn't come in to make a plea deal." This gives me the impression he has full intensions of fighting this to the end. Good." -
Fibre Channel For The Masses
Diesel Dave writes: "Fibre Channel is an awesome technology handling serial Gigabit transmission rates of both SCSI and IP over up to 30 Meters of 2 pair Copper or 10 Kilometers of optical cable, with up to 126 hosts or devices per loop.(WOW!) The newest FC runs at 2GHz. That's up to 400 Megabytes per second in full duplex mode. The problem of course is FC is normally very expensive. However, many of the hackers out there have noticed large amounts 1GHz FC equipment is being dumped on Ebay for a song. (I purchased new 18GB Barracuda drives for $70 each!) The problem is cabling up those funky 40 pin SCA drives without buying a $3000 8 bay enclosure. After much searching I have just found a company called Cinonic Systems that is making low cost Fibre Channel drive and cable adapters that work with plain old CAT5 ethernet cable! As far as I'm concerned firewire, parallel SCSI, and Gigabit ethernet are now dead technologies." It's not all that big a device either -- probably Cinonic is not alone in selling such a thing. Rather cool to connect up hard drives with CAT5, too -- not PITA ribbon cables. -
Interbase Backdoor, Secret for Six Years, Revealed in Source
Diesel Dave writes "CERT Advisory CA-2001-01 announced today that the Interbase server database contains a compiled-in back door account. The thing is, it was not the result of a malicious code infection, but a direct addition by the original Borland/Inprise authors done before the program was released as open source." The backdoor was installed sometime between 1992 and 1994, and has been included in every version of Interbase during that time. -
What Happened to OpenCCVS?
musicmaster asks: "Do you know what happened to OpenCCVS (Open Credit Card Verification system). Originally it was built by Dave Cinege (original homepage). After he stopped working on it about mid-1999 it was taken over by BlackHoleSun, whose site now contains the message that work has ceased since 'many legal snags and licensing issues' didn't justify the effort. OpenCCVS is a clone of CCVS (originally located at www.hks.net, now taken over by Red Hat and placed here). Although Red Hat publishes some of the source to buyers it is not Open Source." Are there any other free software projects developing credit card verification systems?
