Adobe Makes Products Harder to Use, More Expensive
An anonymous reader writes "This is a follow-up to an earlier story on slashdot about Adobe releasing their Creative Suite package. It seems that Adobe has decided to go they way of Intuit's TurboTax last year and add activation to their products. Legitimate users are up in arms. For Adobe, they follow the steps of other companies, macromedia, quark (who coincidentally shipped their entire engineering offshore) in the graphics biz. Now since in theory they'll be making more money, I hope at least the price goes down (oops, it did not, looks like the upgrade price even increased)." -
Scribus 1.0 Released

If it can even marginally compete with the industry leader, this is a big deal -- I know a lot of people for whom Quark is the killer app that prevents them from moving to Linux, and most of them are tired of paying a grand for the privilege of using it." -

Desktop Publishing for Unix?
weierophinney asks: "In a past job incarnation, I was a graphic artist and page layout technician for a small guidebook publisher. We were a Windows-based shop, and I used Macromedia Freehand for drawing maps, Adobe Photoshop for scanning and sizing images, and Quark XPress for book layout. I have since moved on to web programming, but occasionally want to do something that would use these tools. While I use GIMP regularly, I have yet to find a -good- free, open-source, alternative to the 2D vector graphics programs I used, or a page layout program with the power of Quark XPress. Is anybody in the Linux community doing publishing or using such tools, be they commercial or otherwise? Is Linux a viable option for small publishers (where profits are often slim and money for software upgrades is sparse)?" -
Quark-Sun Alliance
hazzmatt sent this blurb my way: "Here's an announcement linking Sun and Quark together in their fights against Adobe and NT, respectively. Nice to see Unix making some inroads on the content side. But is Quark hooking up with the right Unix? Apparently this is a bid to gain marketshare momentum on Adobe, who are rumored to be readying a Quark-killer version of Pagemaker."
