Re:Whatever happened to Wengo?
It became qutecom.
The code is sitll there, but the project hasn't seen many updates recently, and development has slowed down to almost nothing.

Re:QuteCom
QuteCom runs well on a number of platforms.
The following platforms has a status of "good":
- Windows 2000
- Windows XP
- MacOS X
- Debian
- Ubuntu
- Fedora
- SUSE
- Mandriva
In addition, as of five months ago:
- Gentoo is "not tested"
- Windows CE "doesn't work yet"
I trust prebuilt binaries for all the platforms are coming soon.

Re:Open Wengo has always worked for me...
Switch to QuteCom, which is based on OpenWengo / WengoPhone. The long-awaited QuteCom 2.2 RC1 is now available.

Re:QuteCom is cross-platformQuteCom is very much cross-platform, including Linux of course. You can download prebuilt Linux binaries for a couple of Linux distributions here.
Source code for that version is of course available there as well, or you can check it out from the repository.

Qutecom instead of Openwengo
Openwengo is dead, it's now called Qutecom. Also I'm wondering whether Ekiga is not much mature, especially now version 3.00 is around the corner.

Re:Maybe
I did a long time ago, after some reading, when Skype wasn't eBay yet and this was just in.
Qutecom just about does the job for me - and it's Free as in Speech.
