Re:whooboy.
Yeah, if you absolutely have to watch your DVDs on a computer. There's still the old-fashioned TV set with a region-free player.

Re:Good
Sadly, it's nearly impossible to find an NTSC multiregion player here in the U.S.
:-(
Are you kidding? I can pick one up at my local corner deli. (Seriously - they sell an iWin or J-Win or some such off-brand model for $129.) You may not be able to buy one at major retail chains like Best Buy, but to say these things are "impossible to find" in the U.S. is just not correct. In my experience, you can buy them almost everywhere but the major retail chains.
Just because you haven't personally looked very hard doesn't mean they're difficult to find. Anyone who really wants a region free player can find one easily, and even if you live out in Bumblefark, Idaho, there's always a little something I like to call the Internets.
Region coding is dead. The only people it affects are people who don't care enough to buy a region-free player, which means it's not helping the studios at all. -
Re:is there anyone out there...
1) Are there any affordable region free players available legally in the U.S.?
Plenty. I got my Phillips 724 about a year ago, paid ~$120 IIRC (would be a lot cheaper today, given the pricing trends). All it needed was a code from the remote to reset it to region 0. This site has a lot of information about liberating your DVD player.

Re:This is a power move
Try buying a player in the US that can circumvent regional coding from any major retailer. They simply don't exist.
Screw major retailers. I spent about 10 seconds on Google and found all of these:
- Zone Free DVD
- DVD City
- Overseas Best Buy
- 220-Electronics
- J-List
- and a whole hell of a lot more
-
Even better..
....is a site that has lots of players

Re:Yes! Phillips rocks.
Its rather late in the discussion, but for a lot of philips models all it takes is ir codes to region unlock them. look here for the basic instructions.

Re:Digital means crackzDoes it play the most recent region 1 discs? I heard the bad guys came up with a scheme in which new region 1 discs refuse to play in all-regions players, but found nothing about this except a very short notice in some DVD player manufacturer's site. Anyone has more information about this?
Some disks (The Patriot, for example) don't play in no-region players (I had my Apex set to region 0 and all I got on start-up was a pretty map of the world, showing all the regions).
Luckily, I could just reset my player to region 1.
Interestingly enough, some movies are region-free (including the Robocop and Night of the Living Dead movies). See http://www.regionfreedvd.net/discs.html.
