Interesting, but...I wouldn't consider their OS to be ground-breaking. Using a database for the filesystem is not a very new idea. 3-D desktops are still a ways off, but progress is being made. And virtual machines have been around for a while now.
The guys at MIT have done an admirable job in merging several of these cutting-edge technologies into a seamless system. Their OS looks fascinating and I'd definitely like to take it out for a spin. But it's worth noting that most of what they offer is already available under Linux. As far as I'm concerned, they're re-inventing the wheel.

the NOTAIL optionBy default, reiserfs stores small files and `file tails' directly into the tree. This confuses some utilities like LILO. The notail option is used to disable packing of files into the tree.

RTWP
Actually he feels that it's relational databases that are crippling. In his whitepaper advocating a unified namespace, he proposes a hierarchical model that fits to data rather than fitting the data to the model.

Re:What this means> Short time? Are you on crack?
I think the OP meant that Linux is the youngest contestant. NT was released after Kernel 1.0, but development started well in the 80s.

Anyway, there is a lot of activity regarding the file system issue. reiserfs is part of the official kernel since 2.4.2. sgi released version 1.0 of their port of xfs port. And IBM is still working on jfs.Hardware vendors have discovered that Linux can be used to outsource OS development.
