What's On Your Thumbdrive?
Broue Master asks: "Nowadays, we need to support not only people at the office, but friends, family, friends of the family, family of the friends... you name it! They all run Windows to a degree and there are many tools to help you when assisting. Personally, I have a thumb-drive with removable memory cards. One of them has a small bootable Linux, the other one is filled with ready to use Windows utilities (CPU-Z, Ultra-Edit32), DOS utilities I've been collecting over the years, and Unix-style utilities (ps.exe, kill.exe, and others) ported to Windows, without the need for a layer like Cygwin. I also have a copy of the install files for AVG, Spybot, Sygate and the likes. But, even though I think I have many great tools, I'm sure I do not know about a lot of great others to help diagnose and solve problem. So I ask you, what's on your thumb-drive?" -
Stubborn Spyware Removal Advice?
onedobb asks: "I'm sure all of us are familiar with Lavasoft's Ad-Adware and Spybot Search and Destroy, however there always seems to be that particular piece of spyware, or malware that seems to slip past both of those programs (even with the most recent definition updates, and virus definitions). What program combinations, or websites do you use to uproot that last bit of unwanted software intrusion?" -
Symantec Competing Unfairly Against Spybot?
frankbaird writes "Symantec has been claiming for months that the anti-spyware program Spybot-Search & Destroy corrupts Norton Ghost images. Spybot has tried to convince them this is a false positive. After having been ignored, and this is the second time Symantec has claimed a false positive against Spybot, the makers of Spybot have gone public. They claim that rather than compete fairly with quality products, Symantec is resorting to libel." -
Stopping Unstoppable Malware?
A frustrated troubleshooter asks: "I've recently been asked to fix a friend's computer, and for once, I'm stumped. There is a piece of malware on his computer that puts up Aurora popup windows. Neither Spybot nor Ad-Aware detect this, so I've had to try to manually clean the system. However, the files re-write themselves, making the malware grow back as fast as you can remove it. The only "solution" is to run an uninstaller written by the people who wrote the Aurora pop-up itself. Has anyone dealt with this particularly painful piece of pop-up programming, and if so, how have you successfully removed it?" What other pieces of Malware have you found that was difficult to remove? Aside from using programs like the afore mentioned Spybot and Ad-Aware (and others of their ilk), what other methods of Malware removal have proven to be the most successful? -
MS AntiSpyware vs Ad-Aware vs. SpyBot
An anonymous reader writes "Flexbeta.net compares Microsoft's new spyware fighting tool, Windows AntiSpyware, to Ad-Aware and SpyBot S&D; the two leading spyware tools on the market today. The review sets up an infected PC using VMWare Workstation and scans the machine using all three tools to see which tool detects the most spyware. Though still in beta, Microsoft AntiSpyware does an amazing job at detecting spyware by finding twice as many infected files as Ad-Aware and nearly three times as SpyBot." -
Microsoft Releases AntiSpyware Program
Nathan Weinberg writes "Microsoft released this morning Microsoft AntiSpyware, the product of last month's acquisition of GIANT. As I write in my report on my site, the program is very powerful, and certainly measures up to and may even beat Spybot and Ad-Aware. However, it's also pretty buggy, and Microsoft might have already sneaked in a pay subscription service." -
Anti-Spyware Products Don't Live Up to Promises
John Wells writes "In the December, 2004 issue of PC World, the author of an article titled Poor Defenders concludes that most commercial anti-spyware software is ineffective. In tests using a fresh install of XP and 6 typical spyware infections the commercial software failed to stack up against freeware competitor Spybot Search and Destroy. Four out of seven commercial products failed to remove any of the infections. One product even installed 57 spyware files itself! Conclusion: Use freeware products like Spybot and Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE Personal."
