SAP and MySQL Join Forces
An anonymous reader writes "Heise Online is reporting that SAP and MySQL are going to cooperate (German article, you may want to use Google's translation). Short summary: MySQL and SAP are going to develop a new database server. 'The primary responsibility for the development and product management is with MySQL' says SAP spokesperson Karl-Heinz Hess. Until the new database is released, SAP will continue to develop its own free database system SAP DB, however it will now use the MySQL brand name." On a related note, IBM is introducing a low-end version of DB2. -
What is Holding SAP-DB Back?
Derek Neighbors queries: "The current story about MySQL 4.0 has erupted into a Postgres vs. MySQL debate. We at GNU Enterprise, who have used about all Free and Propietary databases, would like to know why exactly people arent using SAP-DB? It clearly is on par with Oracle, is GPL and frankly has an awesome support team in SAP AG. There was a PG vs SAP-DB recently. Someone else mentioned that you can get CDROMs for free. So again the question is 'What exactly is hindering a wider acceptance of SAP-DB in Free/Open Software projects?'" -
PostgreSQL vs. SAP?
Johann asks: "As my friend and I embark on building a large web site using open source development tools, I planned on using PostgreSQL. I was reminded that another 'enterprize' database is now released under the GPL - SAP DB. Since there have been countless Pg vs. MySQL comparisons on Slashdot, I wanted to ask: how does SAP DB compare technically to Pg?" -
SAPDB 7.3.00.20 Released
Christopher B. Brown writes: " SAPDB.org reports the release of a new version. It stomps rather a lot of bugs and lists quite a few added features, though few leap out as being worthy of vast excitement. SAP DB was once sold as Adabas-D, and while it's certainly less famous than Oracle, it is likely more nearly comparable from a technical perspective to Oracle than just about any other DBMS available on Linux. Some components are licensed under the GPL, libraries typically under the LGPL. The challenge in its deployment lies in the fact that they use a highly customized set of development tools to script the rather daunting compile process instead of traditional Unix tools like Make. There is a small army of developers from SAP Labs (they're hiring people ) so that this may become increasingly credible as an alternative to the expensive DBMSes over time, and it's available freely already..." -
